Do you have a pool?

My DH and I are considering a pool purchase. About the only thing we have decided on so far is that it needs to be above ground. My DH grew up with a Kayak pool and I grew up with a Sun Holiday pool. Basic rectangular pools with attached decks. We both tend to like those pools but we were wanting to really explore all of our options.

What type of above ground pool do you own? Can I see a picture? What type of cost are we looking at (if you wouldn't mind my asking :))?

Thanks!

No comment on the pool type but be sure to look at all the options for Solar Heating.

We have friends with both in ground and above ground pools. The above ground pool is not insulated and is never warm!! Even with the solar blanket, it just won't stay heated. Our two friends with in ground pools don't have the problem, I assume the ground insulates the pool so the heat doesn't escape so easy?

Actually, we are only considering above ground. In the ground is not an option for us.

I have a Safari Pool purchased from Harrow's on Long Island, I think it was the Johnny Weismuller. The pool was a 15x24 Oval with a 15x12 Deck. Fencing was all around the pool. After 22 Years the ole girl is still standing and managed to survive three kids, Storms, High Winds, and other assorted Natural Events. Out lasted every above ground pool in the neighborhood. It is made of Extruded Aluminum which does not rust, as does Copper Bearing Steel Pools. I am in the process of taking it down now since no one used it last year. I plan on taking it to the Scrap Metal Place to see if I can get back what I paid for it more than 20 Years ago.

Thanks Patch'sD! One of the pools we are going to go see is an Esther Williams pool and know that yours is made by the same maker. Quick question, I know your decking went all the way around the pool, but were you able to WALK on the deck all the way around?

Ask about the liner. Some (EW) use a "princess" bead. Those cost $$$$$$ to replace. A standard bead will be common place for you to find down the road.

Look into the constuction. There really is not that many differences. I would look for a metal track (resin freezes and breaks) and an aluminum bead reciever.

No and after looking at the wet bloated rodent CSI pics, I'm not sure I want one.

Yes, we have an inground vinyl lined pool. The upkeep is much easier than the gunite pool we had.

Above-ground pool here. 16 x 24 oval, husband built the deck. We're in the Chicago area and tried do do the solar cover only option. By mid-summer, the pool was warm enough for me. After two years, we got a heater and I wish we'd done it at the beginning. You didn't mention if you were getting a heater, but I would recommend it. We don't run it all that often and still use the solar cover to retain heat. It's made a huge difference in our enjoyment of the pool.

We have an in-ground pool, although we may not be able to swim in it this summer. Having some troubles getting it to not be the color of lime jello. :(

We do, and I love it. We have an above ground 24 inch pool. As we live in colder climate, we also have a heater. We are almost ready to open it, and use it A LOT from May to October.

My children are 10 and 13, and in the summer months we have tons of kids and family and friends over. I enjoy knowing where my kids are, and usually don't mind having others over. This was my thought going into getting it.

We have had a deck built around the pool, and we use it an awful lot in the summer months. I have no regrets, and sadly no pictures.

We have a doughboy pool. 28 foot round with a deck completely around the entire pool. Makes if feel a litle more like an inground pool.
We have solor cover and in the heat of the summer..we actually had cold water. It the water gets over 95, we have problmes with algea...mustard algee..yuk!

Did you look at your phosphate level? Many pool stores do not test for it and yet it is a huge problem. Very easy to fix.

One suggestion I would make it to get a salt water filtration system instead of the chlorine system, the chemicals are very expensive and of course if you are alergic to bleach it's not really an option.

Make sure you fully understand the costs of it. Your homeowners will go up, if you don't have a fenced yard, you'll need to get one. Water to fill it, chemicals to maintain it, natural gas or electric to heat it. It's not just the cost of the pool and the installation! Between these costs and our climate (Chicago, the pool would only be open about 4 months a year), DH and I have decided we'll never have a pool.

I just wanted to update you. I took my pool down over the past two weekends. Upon inspection, the pool and hardware was the same as when I put it up 22 years ago. No rust, No rusted hardware, it would have lasted another 22 years. My deck did not go all the way around, only at one end. Fence went all the way, I used to walk on the coping and hold on to the fence to vacum.

Over the years I had to replace the liner twice, two filter motors (One my fault for not draining it before winter storage) Same Hayward DE Filter I got with the pool.

Beaded liner is regular and costs about $ 400 to replace. Chemicals for the year were always about $ 100.00

Hope this helps
