Do you have a glass cooktop?

I finally replaced my coil style cook-top with a used glass radiant top. ( older GE Profile one) but I think it might be defective. The burners come on like at full heat for a few seconds (3-8 seconds depending on the heat setting.) then turn off, then on then off..... It cycles like this even on high heat. ( reminds me of when a microwave cycles on and off on the defrost setting)

It will cook and boil water, but this cycling does not seem right? Is this the way these stovetops work? All of the burners do this.

The guy of course said that it worked great, but it wouldn't be the first time someone lied to me about something.

Thanks for your help.

It's supposed to do that. It retains heat and it's not all the way off. It is cycling to heat back up. It's the same as an oven, it heats to temp, stops heating for a few minutes and then fires up again to keep an even temperature.

I don't own one but have cooked on one enough times to know that it should do that.

Ours does this. It goes on at full heat and then it readjusts and then goes on again... Nothing wrong with it. I am no handyman, but I would think it's just like an AC that adjusts itself when it needs to achieve a certain temperature....

Mine cycle like that :goodvibes

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Just to confirm, even on high heat it will only light up for about 6-8 seconds before turning off again?

Yep - normal, even on high heat. I just got a new stove with a glass cooktop and the manual stated this a couple of times. The oven does it, too.

Mine does this too. I actually have one burner that will randomly stay on 'red' for longer than I know I should so I am having to keep an eye on it. Hoping that it will something that can be fixed instead of having to replace the whole stove because it's only 5 years old.

Oh thank goodness. Looks like my luck is changing. :worship::rotfl:
This cooktop looks good and was only 100.00 ( and a 2hr drive).

yup, we have a newer one and it does the same thing, no matter what setting you have it on. Our older one did it too. That's just how they work.

Mine doesn't do that. On high it stays on. All of your stovetops are defective!!!!

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Also no smilies since I'm posting from eticket.

Mine does that too. The old one from before the fire did that too. :) You are fine, enjoy your glass cooktop!!! I love mine!

I have the GE profile cooktop too....and it does cycle on/off like that. I love it but it is the hardest thing in the world to keep clean.............

This one came from someone who seldom cooked and had only ever used the one large burner. That burner does show a little use, but probably no more that I would do to it in a few months anyway.

I had a stainless Dacor that had the modules for coils, grill or griddle. It was really old but nice and I just couldn't see paying to update when it worked just fine. I don't spend much time in the kitchen so this was a low priority for me. I do think I will be happier with this, once I get accustomed to cooking on a strobe light. :lmao:

Get a bottle of Weiman Glass Cook Top cleaner, look for it at a Target, or a hardware store. It will be worth the money, mine has lasted for so long. Only use a wet washcloth, never use an abrasive sponge, with the cleaner. My cooktop looks like new and is 10+ years old.

Get yourself some good pans, I like my cuisinart cookware, the heavy flat bottoms work great on this type of stove. My old warped pans were a pain to cook with, I am so happy to have a great set of pans. You can find them at Marshalls/TJMaxx if you want to try one before buying a whole set.

I hated the old coil cooktops, they were a pain to keep clean.
Enjoy your new stove......

Mine's Whirlpool & was new with our house (3.5 yrs old.) I hate to admit it, but I'm disappointed in it :sad2: I scratched it up the FIRST WEEK we moved in! Make sure you don't scoot pans back & forth. I guess I'd previously had the habit of doing that as I stirred my ingredients in the pans. Every burner is scratched & looks bad. I also use that stovetop cleaner after each use. Oh, & mine cycles on & off, too ;)

That's what I use too. I scrub it on whenever I see a spill, let it sit for a couple minutes, and then scrub it off with a cooktop cleaner scrubbie (also found at target by the sponges and such, it's a red rectangular softer scrubbie). I've never had a problem with anything getting stuck to where I couldn't get it off. I think the trick is to clean off any stains you see as soon as you see it and the stove cools off. If you let it sit there and continually cook on it before cleaning it off, I think it sets in more.
