Do you have a Company issued credit card?

I have recently been asked to take over the care of our pool car fleet for the office. It is a total of 4 cars and I would be responsible for service and having the cars washed and detailed periodically.

Most service work is billed directly through our fleet service account but washing and detailing won't be.

My boss has asked that I get a corporate credit card to handle those expenses. I would be putting the charges on the card and then filing an expense report to cover the bill.

At past employers I would just use my own credit card and expense it and then pay my bill, but in most cases everything was just billed directly to the company.

I am just curious how having an additional credit card with more available credit would affect our (or my) credit score?

I am not really keen on the idea of having to get another credit card. My husband and I are about to close one that we don't use because we don't need it and I don't want to turn around and open another one, especially a credit card I don't plan on using much.

So any idea how much it would affect our score? I don't know what the limit would be so any help you could give with the limited information I have provided would be appreciated.

thanks,

It would most certainly be a hit on your credit. It will show on your credit report because you will use your SS# to open. Will you be the one in charge of making sure the payments are made on time? All it would take is one or two late payment by your company to ruin your credit. I personally would never do it.

A corporate credit card (actually usually a charge card) is taken out in the name of the company and then billed to the company. It doesn't effect your credit history at all.

It sounds like your boss is asking you to open a credit card in your own name and then only using it solely for expense check type charges. Tell him no thanks, but if he wants he can open one up in his name and then add you as an authorized user. LOL

Are you sure he isn't wanting to set up a credit card in the company's name for those charges? Even with a card where the bill goes to the company and you are an authorized cardholder you should fill out an expense report to justify those charges. My husband has to do that for the travel card they issued last year. Before that he always did as you do, charge it on his personal card and submit for reimbursement. We always kept a separate credit card account for his business expenses so they didn't get comingled with our personal spending. I certainly wouldn't open an account because my boss wanted a separate account.

That being said, I have had issues in the past at work with people who didn't/wouldn't use a personal credit card for work. Some lines of work it's just a necessity. (They didn't issue company cards because of previous abuse by employees).

If it's the company's credit card that has your name, you will probably show as an "authorized user" on your credit report. That isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I have a company credit card, it isn't on my personal credit report. I am not responsible for paying the bill, the company is, so it is the company's credit.

Both DH and I had/have corporate cards. They don't show up on your credit report, the responsible party is the corporation. You are essentially just an authorized user. Our names were always printed on our cards, but no impact/anything to do with your personal credit score/history.

Why anyone would want to put business charges on their personal card is beyond me. One late reimbursement and you're on the hook for the payment or YOUR credit may be impacted. I worked for a company that didn't consider a bill due until 90 days after they got it or the expense report. And they refused to pay you back for interest if you incurred any on your personal credit card.
My current employer issues company credit cards, but our crews covering the Post season and World Series in San Francisco discovered parking was cash only, $100 a day.:scared1: One guy was out $700. Corporate eliminated petty cash so he has to wait 4 weeks for a check.

I'm not 100% savvy on the credit card end but work in finance for my company. I know we have employee pay cards where the card is from our corporate account but the CC is in the employees name and they are responsible for paying. We had traditional corporate cards but no one was submitting expense reports so we switched back to employee so they would be a little more responsible with their spending and submit their expense reports.

Most certainly?

Not true. We have hundreds of company credit cards and the employee's social security number is not associated with the card in any way and in no way shows up on their credit report.

I've had many company cards over the years and your scenario has never been close to how the situation worked.

I had an AmericanExpress corporate card at my first work, and it did appear on my credit report just like any other card. I believe, I was a join owner, not an authorized user. It was mostly for travel, and we were supposed to be reimbursed, and then paid the bill ourselves, just like you do with your personal card. I remember the company being vigilant to use the corporate card for work travel expenses because they did not want employees to rack up cc points on reimbursable expenses (I am sure AmEx gave the company some sort of sweetener instead). The secondary incentive was to submit your expense reports on time, so you don't get caught with a bill due and no reimbursement. The company was very good at paying us back within a week of request.

I'd prefer to put expense on my own card. I'm a saver so I have more than enough of a cushion to float the expenses while I wait for reimbursement. And then I earn points on the expenses :)

I got to do that for about two months before my card got issued- an 8 day trip went on my card. That's some good point earning right there!

Now the corporate card I have, we (employee) are still responsible for any interest accrued, but we don't make the payment. All I can do is hope my expense report gets processed in a timely manner. I find it incredibly stressful waiting to see if my company paid on time. There WAS an expense reporting hiccup this month, and I am going batty trying to figure out if my $11 charge is going to be paid on time (they only paid $480 instead of $491 due to the hiccup). I wish so much that I could just pay it and have them pay me back.

I work for a large company and have a corporate card for travel. The rule is if you travel at least twice a year, you should sign up for a corporate card. The bills do not go directly to the company, we have to fillout an expense report for approval by management, separating out air, hotel, car, meals, etc. The bill has our name and home address on them so I guess you could be personally responsible. Then the expense account system sends the money to the bank or direct deposits employee reimbursements (example - personal mileage). When I was traveling alot, it was a big job to keep it all accounted for, each trip was expensed separately.

A previous employer of mine used to calculate how many points employees got on their personal cards..........one of frequent travelers was surprised when they noted they had earned enough points on company business to pay for a free trip, which the company expected him to book for them .

Because we make about $120 in Credit Card Rewards a month on my husband's expense report charges - which we get in cash to our Fidelity Brokerage account to invest.

He's worked for the company for over a decade and they've never taken more than 2 weeks to reimburse us, so I'm not too worried about them sticking me with the bill.

This is the reason I do it, too. I work for a small dentist office. All supplies go on my credit card ($4-6k/month), and I make them pay me back within 2 weeks. I know I am taking a risk, especially since my company is so awful with money. But they always pay me back, so until they start taking too long to pay me I will keep it up. The rewards make a nice dent in the vacation budget!

I have a company card and I'm the authorized user and the bill goes to the company. It has my name on the bottom but below my name is the company name.

I wish my job still asked me to charge work expenses to my CC and get reimbursed! We have enough of a cushion we never paid finance charges when I had that set up at my old job, and the miles from work expenses sent Dh and I to Europe first class for our Honeymoon.

Yes, He sent me the link this morning to apply for the card, the bill would come to my house and I would have to file an expense report to get the money to pay the bill, or pay it and just be reimbursed when the expense payment comes.

I told him no thank you. that unless there was another way to take care of the expenses I would not be obtaining another credit card.

No, this bill would be coming to my house. It would strictly be for business expenses so it would be sitting idle the majority of the time, and just show as available credit on my credit report. Not something I want.
