My mom had knee replacement surgery so she has some pins in her knee and wondered if she goes through a metal detector getting on the ship. Does she need a note from her doctor?

When we were there last year, there was a pair of detectors at the entrance to the terminal.

You do go through the metal detector..Very much like an airport screening system..Carry-ons and all..

I would think a letter would help, but not vital..

My MIL has had both knees replaced and her doctor's office gave her a card that fits in her wallet that explains what kind of knee surgery she had and that it may set off the alarms. She hasn't had any trouble at the airports. She shows it to the person who heards you through the "magic archway" before going through. They just wand her after she steps through.

I don't know what the protocol is, you might want to give DCL a call. But on our December cruise, dd's braces set the thing off. They made her go through and back about 3 times before one of security personnel, said "She's got a mouthful of braces, let her on through". She was so embarrassed. I thought they were going to strip search her!!!!!! :p

Are you flying? I'd be more worried about airport security than the ship security. Her doctor should have given her a note about the implants at the time of the surgery. Yes, she should have one to fly or get on the ship.

We are driving not flying 5 hour drive to the port with good traffic. But thanks for the help I will have her get a note.

I have a pacemaker and I just tell the people as the metal detectors. They have a wand or sometimes do a pat down. I have a card but have never been asked for it. I am not the normal pacemaker patient either I got it when I was 13. I have never had any problems at airports. Have a great time!

I also have a pacemaker (got mine at 20). And on all five of our cruises had to show the pacemaker card to avoid the metal detector and the wand.

Wasn't sure how sensitive the metal detectors at port were, but I am not able to breeze through the airport ones.

You go through also when reboarding the ship after being in port (I guess they are checking your purchases and stuff).

i have a metal plate and six screws in my shoulder, and it's never set off the metal detectors at airports or security checkpoiints at government buildings. i'd say your safe but a note is a good idea for peace of mind.
