We always have non-smoking and have always gotten it with
DVC. I've only just started making additional requests like upper floor at SSR or specific building ranges at OKW. My last trip we arrived at 7 p.m. and were put in room 4810 in OKW which is a disabled room. We were not told that it was the disabled room, so when we got there, we were disappointed. It was our 7th annual girlfriends trip and one of the girls really likes to take a bath - which she obviously couldn't do as there was just a shower. Also the refrigerator was placed right beside the bed - not conducive to sleeping - we could've moved it, I suppose, but there wasn't really anywhere else to move it to where it would not be in the way.
Anyway, I immediately called to see if we could change but they were all sold out of studios for that night but they could move us the next day. So we did that -- I expressed my disappointment about our room assignment as the room did not meet my expectations when we made the reservations (although in hindsight I supposed I should've realized there is always the possibility to be assigned a disabled room). We were also deprived of the use of a room for the day as we could not get into our new room until close to 4 p.m. (deprived is too strong of a word because it was our choice to move). I asked if there was any way they might compensate us for our inconvenience (I was thinking a free ice cream or even a balloon - just something....) but they informed me that they were ALREADY doing me a big favor by allowing us to move and not charging us for the room change (apparently DVC owners who request a room change are charged?) FWIW, we moved ourselves, and yes, I know that housekeeping had to come clean the room since we had spent one night in it.
FWIW, the original room we were assigned was not very fresh - it didn't appear to have been occupied for a while - there was quite a build-up of dust on ledges and it smelled like it had been closed up for a bit. The CM I spoke to when I called to change rooms was a bit surprised that we were in it until she checked and saw they were sold out.
We enjoyed our new room assignment - building 23, upper floor, non-smoking - so I got all the things we wanted. I really didn't care except that we needed non-smoking and a bathtub
