Do you find yourself wanting to respond to certain threads

I don't have the energy for trouble on an internet board with 70,000+ strangers. This board is meant for entertainment. Many of the threads I read are so ridiculous that I know if I give my honest opinion I'll be banned. In those cases I give no response at all. If I do choose to give an opinion it is going to be an honest one so I pick and choose what I reply to.

Yes. In fact just this evening I started to respond, but choose to delete it before I submitted.

I will type out a long response and then end up deleting it before hitting submit. Sometimes it just feels good to get it out without actually sending it!

I do the same thing, I am glad I am not alone.

Every now and then I forget myself and post to a political thread. Bad idea. I do find it sad, though, that we have become so divided a nation that we can not have a civil, intellegent conversation about anything political. Discourse is part of what keeps a democracy strong.

I try to stick to the fun stuff, red or blue (or purple), who cares. We are all lime green.

For the most part I've learned, over the years here, that it's just not worth it to respond to hot topics (the President, Catholic threads, gay issues, abortion) but once in awhile I weaken and I post an opinion/reply/explanation but I almost always live to regret it!

Me too. I sometimes wonder if people have put me on Ignore, for the few times I've been baited into answering. At least that would explain all the threads I've killed that no one will respond after!

I have to ask you a question. Do you ever get tired of all the horrible teacher threads? Sometimes I feel like typing something that I can't so I don't.

They are like an accident to me. I know I shouldn't look but I can't help myself.

I find it amusing how many people get slammed for simple questions. As soon as I see a post like "Is it bad if I don't buy a tix for my 3yo?" I have to read it. It's better than soap operas. I think "here we go again". Some folks need to lighten up, I would hate to know them in RL!!!

But in answer to the question, I am a "back button" kinda girl!

I sure did a lot of typing and deleting of part of one of my posts today. Wanted to say a lot more than what I was saying. See, I can watch what I say! I just hate to be misunderstood. If I'm being sarcastic, fine, call me sarcastic. I'm in a pissy mood and if I weren't sick today I would go clean my house instead of DIS. OK, back away slowly....

Doesn't it make you wonder what they are like in real life? Sometimes I think that people hide behind their computers and say so much more here than what they would IRL.

And yes, I also like to read certain threads because I know they are going to be live ones!

Lately, I'm finding it takes considerable restraint to keep from posting on some threads. I mean, sometimes I just want to say what I REALLY think, but do I want to risk getting banned? I keep telling myself, don't open those threads, don't read those threads.

I guess sometimes it's best to just take a deep breath and back away.

Sometimes I just "back away from the keyboard" and "sit on my hands". Other times I just can't help myself, but I *try* to temper how I say things. There are a lot of pot stirrers and nut jobs here on the DIS. There is no reason to get banned over one of them.

LOL, my son and I had this discussion just this morning. I told him "restraint is the highest form of maturity." He sighed and said, "yeah, I know Mommy BUT..."

Then I told him the BUT removes the meaning of the entire conversation!! 13 year olds...

Yes, I avoid A LOT of discussions here, especially about race relations. I read them and report them to my RL friends... much to their shock and awe!! I also avoid the inane comparisons about Universal now.... I've learned NOT to read them anymore, because I've decided at this old age I don't need to explain myself and my needs to anyone anymore...

That's the problem. By the time we hit the 40 somethings, we have learned that social propriety isn't all it's cracked up to be, and we deserve to speak our minds because we have survived to 40 something.

There really is some truth to that. Seriously, though, I just hope that I never get like my mother and let it be an excuse for the way she allows it to butt into the lives of others (when it's truly none of her business...) in the name of, "I'm old, I can speak my mind". But you're right in that we've figured out that it's ok to speak up sometimes and that keeping quiet and being a doormat isn't the way to live, either. And speaking of my mother, in some ways she's a doormat, so what gives?

I for one am definitely a lot bolder online than I am in real life. I'm not very confrontational in person-- I'd rather not bother with any arguments. But for some reason, I sometimes can't resist online!

Here, I try and use the back button. In RL I am very opinionated and usually don't shut up (My husband says that silence scares me!)

I try to be mature, but some people here are just idiots. (Maybe I should have used the back button there).
