I guess when I was told this story, I did not get the impression that anyone was draped over anyone. You guys make it sound like they were groping all over each other!!! To me, leaning on someone with your arm casually around their shoulder is not that bad, it's like reading over someone's shoulder. But hey, I guess that's not what I consider flirting, and apparently some of you do.

And I know you were serious about the singles bar comment, but I'm sorry, that just made me laugh!!

I guess I'm having a hard time picturing what you are talking about.... this is probably one of those things that you should actually SEE before you make a judgement......they could have been in close proximity because they were speaking of something confidential.. in that case it wouldn't be unprofessional.....

Also, it depends a lot on who it was and their personality, IMO. It would be out of character for me and it should make someone say, "Hmm...Bucks getting a little chummy with the Doc." While others, knowing their personality, I might not think anything about it.

I would consider it inappropriate if either party felt uncomfortable with it. Otherwise, my motto is live and let live.

Its amazing how the workplace has changed over the years. When I first started with the company I work for, 9 years ago, we were a tight bunch in that we did a lot of hugging as a way of greeting one another, etc. Not so today. In fact, a co-worker of mine told me the other day, "you have the prettiest eyes" and then later came back and apologized because he thought I might have felt sexually harrassed. I just laughed and said I was flattered, but I guess someone out there might feel harrassed over a compliment. Got to be very careful what you say and who you say it to, that much I know.

I wouldn't do it, but I wouldn't look twice if someone else was. Some people are more comfortable with touching other people, especially people of the opposite sex, than I am. As long as they were both happy with it, it wouldn't bother me.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm heres a thought , maybe they just had a pt. pass away, and they were consoling each other. Why does everything have to be appropriate or inappropriate. Why can't some things just be okay and left at that.

Ahhh! See, when I first read your post, I thought you meant that the front of the nurse's body was leaning over the back of the doctor's body and the nurse's arms were around his neck -- that would be very inappropriate no matter what.

But, after seeing Mermaid's response, and re-reading the post, it seems like the doctor was leaning over the counter, the nurse walked up, stood next to him and put an arm loosely around his shoulder???? Maybe not inappropriate, depending on the parties involved.

I guess it just depends on what the woman saw and if either party was uncomfortable on whether it was inappropriate or not.

Actually, I've been known to do this, or something similar, on more than one occasion.
Frequently, a doc will call me to the desk to tell me he's writing orders he wants done STAT and then, quit talking while he writes, or, he may say aloud his orders while he's writing them
I may well hang my arm over his shoulder and read over his shoulder while he writes. Or, if he is sitting, I may place a hand on each shoulder and lean over him. No other body parts are touching other than hand to shoulder and this is only with those docs with whom I have a good rapport (i.e.-- kid them about their baldness or their age or clothing or any number of things).

I certainly don't consider this "flirting" or "groping" or many of the other descriptive words I've seen applied here.

Guess I'm inapproppriate in the eyes of many of you. So be it.
