We're staying at POR in 12 days. We booked thru AAA and our requests are printed on our AAA confirmation. Should we also call or fax the hotel directly? If yes - how far ahead?
Most of he hotels throw the faxes away. They used to pay attention to them but eventually they were overwhelmed by the number of faxes they received. If your request is on your reservation, then that's what counts.
I had planned on it but then decided against it. Like the others have said, it was on my AAA reservation and when we arrived we checked in together and mentioned it again (we were a party of 5 looking for adjoining rooms). The CM was absolutely fantastic, probably the best one we had all week, and took care of our adjoining room request along with alot of other things that he picked up on during our conversation that we didn't even ask for. Faxing would not have helped in our case because we were taken care of but we only had that one request so it could be different if you have numerous requests.
I fax my request every time and have gotten what I asked for every time. (I know there's no guarantee though). As PP said, check out this link. You'll want to send it 4 days in advance http://www.allearsnet.com/acc/cro1.htm
Nope! I note my requests when we make our reservations. We have always gotten what we asked for (not guaranteed) and even got a HUGE upgrade at the GF on one trip.

Same here. Personally, I don't see the need to fax. If you call and make your requests over the phone, it will be noted on your reservation. When I check-in, they usually mention my requests before I've said anything. (The only time we didn't get all of our requests was a trip in the middle of summer -- understandable given how busy it is!)
Most resorts are not looking at the fax requests and are instead going strictly off the reservation. If you are in concierge you can talk directly to the concierge staff about your preferences...otherwise... While you can always send a fax ... if it isn't on your room ressie you probably won't get what you requested on your fax.
