Do You Expect to Sell Eventually?

Can I ask something as a non-owner who often looks at buying resale? How much do you potentially lose by buying and selling ten years later? Obviously there are a lot of unknowns, but I honestly never even thought of the idea of selling once owning... can you regain a fair amount of your initial cost?

We bought in 2017 and a little in 2018, and we paid $106pp for BLT and ~$135-140pp for VGF. So ... We got in before it got really pricey. But I look at some of the old-timers and go, DANG we should have looked a little more seriously in 2014, 2015, when we started to research it a little. We would have gotten grandfathered for some of the better restrictions...

Still, we could sell for a slight profit likely any time this year, and have had about 23 days using our own points for about $6000 in dues. That's an average of $260/nt but that will include VGF studios and 1br, and BLT 1-2br. If trading into Riviera got too hard with our current points *and* we really liked it, I could see us lowballing a resale contract just to use there, if the Riviera resale restriction depresses prices there too much.

I went a lot as a kid, and I definitely can tell that WDW isn't what it "used to be," but it's still a magical place for my kids. Mainly I remember the very light crowds, and having to make tough choices like which rides to use our E tickets on. We always seemed to have a ton of B and D tickets left over. DH didn't go as a kid, so he doesn't really know what he's missing. For him, it's about making memories with his princesses.

I can see us doing more resort time, especially at times the parks seem really crowded. As long as there are fun resort amenities to explore, I think we can keep it "new"ish.

Follow up to my last post about the Disney decline...anyone see the Tambu lounge lately?? Plain Formica counters and it looks like the Contemporary.

We don't plan on selling, we bought a small direct contract in 2018 with plans on adding to it with resales this coming year and daughters are 9 & 12. Will only sell if daughters do not want to take over ownership down the road.

Nope. We went so much pre-kids that I don’t see us stopping even once our girls are grown.

I’ll be in my early 70s when our contract is up.

No. We purchased resale at Animal Kingdom in 2012 for several reasons.
1-It is my wife's favorite resort.
2-It has a longer expiration date, we will be 85 when the deed expires, our son will be 60. He's a Disney fanatic and our soon to be daughter in law is too....then there will be grandchildren involved.
3-The price was right.
4-Disney's protections means the investment was solid. I could sell for 50% more than we paid for the contract now, plus we've used it for 9 trips.

Our son has always been in the loop with dollars and understood that when we move the deed to him, he is responsible for dues-but will never have to worry about room cost to go to Disney.

We will be in our mid 90's when all our contracts expires and we have no plans on selling.

Why....Disney makes traveling by plane so easy.

You get luggage tags put it on your bags,
have someone drive you to the airport,
you get on a "free" MDE bus to the resorts,
the resort (greeters) cast members are fabulous,
bell services are always willingly to help you,
your luggage then magically appears in your room,
and presto you are there!

Now going home you call bell services to pick up your luggage,
go to the on resort airport check in, check your luggage,
wait for the bus,
and presto you are at the airport,
have someone pick you up at the airport and then you are home.

Hopefully our health will allow us to travel and if so we plan on going to the end.

No, we bought back in 1996 and don't plan to sell. Yes, we've seen the changes at WDW and don't love all of them, but we didn't buy so many points (206) as to feel burdened by them.

Our upcoming trip would be about 4 grand in room fees alone. Unless Disney room prices for places like a 2 bedroom at OKW drop below 100 bucks a night, we will always feel like we got a great deal. We've also made a lot of use of the perks they offer for as long as they offer them.

Of our 3 home resorts:
BWV (3 contracts)- unless we are faced with financial devastation, no way. Both our adult children also love the BWV, so I doubt they will ever be sold.
SSR - love the resort, but if it came down to BWV or this, we would (sadly) sell SSR first
BCV - we currently rent these points out, and will likely sell them before 2042 (just not big fans of the resort).

The 6K in annual dues certainly hurts a bit. If the dues do become too much of a financial burden, we are more likely to rent out the points than sell, though (about half our points were bought within a few years of 1999, with the rest bought resale within the past 6 years. As it stands, we wouldn't take a loss with renting or selling).

Side note: After the dues increase, we started rethinking whether or not Riviera would be a consideration. For now, we are adding at least one trip to another country each year (Italy 2019 ), in addition to our twice annual WDW trips. We'll have to see how this new game plan plays out, but at the very least, I expect slightly shorter WDW vacations are in our future (maybe 10 days instead of 13-14)

Tempted by current prices, but still planning to stick with it till 2042. Spent 5 weeks at WDW last year and still not sick of it. Planning to take a year off to visit Kauai and maybe another non Disney location with my non-DVC timeshare this year, but the Star Wars development looked like it was coming along nicely in November and there are definitely positives to balance the negatives.

We had five contracts totaling 500 points. We sold two several years ago and now have three contracts totaling 325 points.

I am in my 70s with no children. I sold an OKW (230) last year. I’m going to sell my BLT (200) in July after a rental that month. For now I am keeping my SSR (200).

The SSR was my first purchase in 2003. Right now it’s stripped until 2020, but we are OK with staying offsite. I can rent my points, pay my dues and be able to stay at a nice place offsite. I do like getting the AP discount along with memory maker and free parking.

We have a van with a lift for my wheelchair so I don’t mind not having the bus service.

I expect we will kepp the points until they go back to Disney.
I suspect if you don't sell in the next 10 years, the resale contracts after that will not be worth much.

We have owned our 300 points since 2003-and that’s been more than sufficient over the years-we vary our WDW trips with Hilton Head or Vero Beach. Most of our trips are with our daughter and her family. Although since I retired we have started taking a short trip by ourselves to escape winter. My daughter and her husband will happily take over our contracts when we can no longer travel. We’re lucky that we purchased DVC only for Disney trips and can still vacation other places. I understand other poster’s burnout, but we still enjoy our trips very much. We still haven’t done the Halloween party and are planning that for next year!

No way! My husband isn't a Disney fanatic like me and always brings up the idea of selling. He would much rather travel abroad, go camping, etc. I just keep reminding him that our girls are only 1 and 4. It's such a magical place for them. In 10 years, they might not love it anymore. When that time comes we can rent our points to fund our other vactions.

I just can't think about selling. I feel so blessed to be able to take my girls to Disney 2-3 times a year. I never went as a child so I am making up for it now!

I do agree, the Disney experience has definitely changed. Our last 3 trips all had issues...but everytime I get back home, I wish I was back in Disney.

We have owned our 460 (OKW & BCV) points since the year 2000. We have no intentions of selling them. My two married sons also own small contracts at SSR because they love Disney so much. My youngest dd also loves Disney. Disney College Program where she met her soon to be future husband. Proposed/engaged at Disney and getting married in Disney. We will be busy with my points.

I have used them in various ways. Invited friends, family, sons always need extra. Have taken many DCL cruises. Disney Vero Resort , Disney Hilton Head resort. One exchange with Interval many years ago (The Royal Sands). We are now branching out to the Princess cruise (Alaska) but we plan on still enjoying Disney and change it up a bit with other non-Disney vacations.

My kids will be more than happy to take over our points but we are hoping we will be around until it expires :-)

I don’t think I will ever sell as I have always imagined taking my future grandchildren to Disney destinations, but unlike in the past I now have no intention of adding on as the costs have gotten out of hand. I only own 200 points, which is perfect for my annual 10 night trip to WDW in a studio. The rest of my vacation time is spent filling up my passport with stamps.

We also plan to go on other vacations as our kids get old enough to enjoy them with us - hopefully by then, WE won't be too old! (e.g. we just to take diving vacations all over the world before kids; that still has several years before it may be a possibility with our kids... we went to Paris last summer and while it was fun, mostly they wanted to go to the playground and eat ice cream. WDW is more child-friendly with the playgrounds/rides/parks/water parks, and has ice cream everywhere.)

I agree... Disney trips are so easy and fun with young kids, and with an infant and a 2 year old we’ll be going regularly for quite a while. We loved traveling internationally before kids but are waiting till they’re a bit older before we make that level of effort, preferably when they’re both out of diapers.
