I do.

I mean, look at the job.

People hate, make fun of the way you look, talk, walk, stand, sit, lie down. When you get sick, people make jokes. When you are well, people say you're sick. You're called every name in the book. If something goes wrong, it's your fault. If something goes well, it's because the previous administration did such a good job.

Every decision you make is questioned, every statement you make is examined under a microscope for hidden meaning. You and your family have no privacy. You're under the constant threat of assassination.

What a lousy job!

I'd worry most about my kids, and the effect on them...the publicity, loss of privacy to just grow-up in a normal environment, the risk of my (or theirs :( ) assassination (sp?). I'm glad I'm a nobody.

I totally agree! That's probably why there are never any good candidates. The good ones are smart enough to stay out of that overwhelming limelight.

yeah there is now way Id want the job thats for sure!

Yes - it certainly doesn't pay well. But the perks are nice - not the interns! Camp David, world travel, etc.

Actually, I think that the difficulty of the job, and getting it in the first place, is so unique that none of the President's we've had can possibly be as bad as their very vocal detractors try to make us believe. There is no way, for example, the Clinton could possibly have been as irresponsible as the right-wing want us to believe and be able to be at all successful navigating a life of public service for as long has he has.

I know that presidents have advisors that they rely upon but I cannot imagine being responsible for decisions that affect millions of people not just in the U.S. but abroad also. Why would you want that pressure? There are not enough perks for me to want to become president or first lady.

BTW, why do we only get to choose from 2 people for president and we can choose amongst 50 for Miss America?:confused3

Mostly, you can thank Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton for the beginning of political parties. It's been downhill ever since.

Look on the bright side... we don't have to endure a swimsuit competition :faint: ;)

I think the main thing for me is the effect it would have on my family! Every choice they made would be for the entire world to see...for the rest of their lives!

I think having a guy that can be no more than 100 feet away from you and carries a suitcase full of nuclear launch codes, is what would scare me. Having the power to wipe every person off the face of the planet is beyond my comprehension.

Beyond that politics is a game and it's all about perception, compromise, and toeing the party line. I like to win all the time and if I were president I'd get tired of losing the battles with the media, public perception, congress, etc.

You have hundreds of people who are at your beck and call 24/7. You are protected as though you were gold-plated. You can travel anywhere in complete comfort. You live in a huge mansion. Everyone is respectful to you in your presence. You are the CiC of the world's only superpower.

It's the ultimate ego trip.

It must take a special kind of drive - that I do not posess - to undertake that kind of responsibility.

Count me in, baby!

I want to be President. I got tired of saying "If I ruled the world" and decided that it would be a better expense of my energy to say "When I ruled the world."

Seriously, though, the life of a public servant appeals to me, and I have been thinking about getting into politics on a local level and seeing where that takes me.

I think local politics are very different from national politics. I think local politics really do allow you to feel as if you are making a difference. Does national politics really allow those who participate to see the difference they make?

Iraq? Afghanistan?

Yeah, they can see the difference they make for good or ill. As long as they have their eyes open.
