of moving away somewhere beautiful?
I think I watch too much House Hunters International. I keep dreaming of someplace small in the Italian or French countryside ..sigh....the simple life.

I like the island house hunters. Not sure what it is called but they find island homes. And the ones in the Caribbean.

I'm trying to move to Japan...going for my fourth visit this November and I fall more in love with it every time I go there

Maybe for a split second. But too many people I know have jumped and moved to that "dream place" and been miserable.

After I read this thread, I saw this drinking game. Had to come back and post it.

We play "House Hunters Bingo"........looking for the usual phrases: "put our stamp on it", "natural light", "granite counters", "stainless appliances", "back yard too small", "fung shui", "grand entry", etc.

As for moving out of the country, I'd move to Quito, Ecuador in a flash. I'd have to leave the other half behind, though.

I'd likely be dead right now had we moved to the place we'd considered. Two months ago I needed state of the art open heart surgery. Place we'd planned had very rudimentary health care. Glad we reconsidered!

Not sure I'm up for anywhere not on par as far as healthcare..

About once a week I entertain day dreams of moving to western Washington. That's God's country, right there. And who knows? Maybe some day I will. I'll probably never move out of Georgia permanently--Christian lives in a group home here and my other two have deep roots here. But I'd love to be bi-coastal--spend May through Sept in Washington, then move back to Georgia for October through April. Ideally, I'd like to move to Florida for January & February, but let's not get all crazy. :dance3:

Isn't that the truth! We have gone through a tremendous year of health crises and I shudder to think how it may have turned out if we didn't live in a large metropolitan area with excellent healthcare services. When I see these people moving out of the country, so far from friends and family, I just shake my head. All I can think is "what are they gonna do if someone has a heart attack or a stroke?"

Yeah and my dh died right here in the good ole USA at age 55. so I guess that's a lousy guarantee. One thing I find so interesting about older folks here in the states is every body plans their retirement based on fear. that's what I shake my head at.

My dh and I lived our early marriage life in Lisbon. wonderful experience. we made great friends and came home to visit family. I don't think I want to live full time out of the country but I'm investigating going back to Portugal or France.

A cousin of mine moved to New Zealand which I heard was beautiful, lol I'll never know because I'm not doing 24 hours on a plane :goodvibes

You make a very good point, and I'm sorry for your loss. Sudden serious illness or death can happen anywhere in the world and right at our doorstep. I guess my concern is not that there isn't good healthcare in other places (clearly, other countries have healthcare systems that are equal or greater than ours.) My issue is how hard it would be if things go wrong AND you're many, many hours away from your support system, friends, and family. It's one thing to have my DH undergo open heart surgery right here in our city (which is what happened last summer), where we have friends and family to help us out. It would be much harder to endure that same situation if it had occurred in another part of the country or the world.

I agree with you that we don't need to plan our retirement from a place of fear. We need to carefully balance our resources against our personal tolerance for risk and the likelihood of bad things happening. If I go into retirement healthy, fit, and with excellent genetics and a fully funded IRA, maybe I don't need to worry too much about dropping dead in my new retirement villa in Guam. But if I go into retirement with chronic illness and a family history where all the women drop dead by age 65, well, maybe moving to a place far from my support system would be a bad idea.

Every single day for the last 15 years, minimum.

I am not kidding. I hate living here. Truly hate it. I sucked it up and dealt with it for the good of my family. Now I am done. Sooooo done.

It really doesn't have to be Italy or a beachfront bungalow. Just some place with better weather and friendlier people.
