Do you ever keep things

that you know you'll probably never use?

We recently bought a cabinet to house record albums. Most of the records we have, we have CD's for now. So why am I keeping them? :confused3 I don't know, for the cover art? Don't really look at them anymore.

My children's school work that is three years old and I still keep them. I'm not ready to throw them away.. not just yet.

Yep, I do. I absolutely dreaded it when I would see my mom headed towards my bedroom with a Hefty bag. I knew what that meant. When my mom got through getting rid of stuff she didn't think I needed, I would sneak into the garage and go through the garbage bag and pull out stuff I wanted to keep. It drove her crazy. I guess I develop weird, nostalgic attachments to things that I don't really need, but think I might need in the future. :confused3
My dad is the same way as me.

I throw away everything that is not nailed down. :teeth: DH says I'm a packrat in reverse. I even scan my paperwork, so I can throw away the paper copies of bills, etc. as soon as I get them.

41 years of keeping things has caused me to rethink the whole keeping process.

I've kept it all, now I'm paying the consequences. Everything in my home needs to be packed and put into storage while we gut the house and add an addition. 100 containers later and I haven't made a dent it what need to be packed. Thank goodness the market is slow and DS and his family haven't sold their home yet.

My basement is full, never mind my attic. I'm been packing for months and months. Why am I keeping this stuff, I'm trying to down-size and have the feeling it's not going to happen.

I do have some stuff that I don't really need to keep, but also can't bring myself to get rid of. Some of it is sentimental value, some of it is "we may need this someday".

Every once in a while I go on a frenzy though, and then I am ruthless with what I get rid of.

I try to live by the one year rule. If you haven't used it or worn it in over a year out if goes. I don't just throw the stuff away. I call Salvation Army, Am Vets or some other charity so someone will be able to use it.

I am guilty as well. We are moving offices right now and yesterday I went through old documents that I have kept over the years? Old calendars, frames that were on my desk that I MIGHT use later, etc. My own house is worse. I keep telling myself I am going to have a shredding day to get rid of all the junk I am storing. I am very sentimental.
I even have the EPT stick I took with my first son to find out I was pregnant

Having been on 2 New Orleans disaster relief trips you would be absolutely stunned what people keep - those trips were big eye openers for me. We've always been pretty good about not keeping things that clutter - and now if we know it won't ever be used again we immediately pitch it.
