just for the sake of arguing? It's not that they really have a particular stance on something but if the conversation is going one way, it seems like they always have to throw in the opposite opinion. It's almost as though they just want to take the opposite point of view just to create controversy where there was none.

I know a few people like that and while I try to respect their opinion you just know when they show up things will get ugly.

My grandma is like that sometimes. I used to just strike it up to thats how her generation was raised and I can't change that. Lately, though, some of her arguments are just so absurd its ridiculous. For example, a local state trooper was shot and murdered on a routine traffic stop a couple monthes ago. I was reading an article about them catching a suspect. I said "good, whoever did that needs to be punished and thrown in jail for the rest of their life." Her reply was, "Well, you don't know what happened between them. He might have had a reason to shoot that trooper. It could have been over drugs, you know". :confused3 So, let me get this straight. A state trooper was doing his job, but the suspect didn't like that fact, so he has the right to shoot the trooper? HUH?

I don't know anyone in real life that does this. I know people who are opinionated, but they stick to their beliefs and are not arguing just to argue. I've seen a few people like that on discussion boards, however...

Yep....pretty much sums up my opinion.

::yes:: Bingo! Notice in my original post I said nothing about it being in real life. ;) :teeth:

Oh this is SO my Dh :lmao: He calls it playing "devil's advocate". He doesn't necessarily have to agree with the opposite stance but he'll always argue it anyway. I adore the man but if you guys ever have to bail me out of jail for killing my husband, you know why :rotfl2:

I agree with the poster that says it must be her Grandmothers generation. My Grandmother and Mother both LOVE to argue or "bicker" as I see it.
Either one of them can start an arguement over anything and everything!

Yep. I think some people join discussion boards just to argue.

Unfortunately I have this all the time in my real life. Not only is my brother like this to the T (and I try not to be around him too mucn---too exhausting), but my Father-in-law is like that, and I am really starting to not like being around him at all. He can not only argue about stupid things he knows NOTHING about just to create opposition and contention, but it can get very hurtful at times. :furious: :furious: :furious:

I'm starting to wonder if DH is a bigamist! :lmao:

Why do you always have to accuse other people of starting an argument when it's really you???? :rotfl:

I am just kidding of course

:rotfl2: Please can it be your week to have him????? This happened just last night! While discussing my current office drama he kept taking the opposite side of everything I said even after he admitted he thought I was in the right! :furious: It was the very first time in the 6 years I've known him that I actually raised my voice to him. I don't get it :confused3 why would you argue with your wife when you really agree with her? :confused3

That is one of my brothers for sure. My brother, Glenn is the type of person who if he hears you tell someone you like their new blue dress he has to correct you and start an arguement by saying no it is powdered blue or whatever. We have showed him facts in black and white to prove him wrong and his reply was you can't believe everything you read. :lmao: :confused3

My ex dh's family live to argue just like my DB, Glenn. I personally try to advoid an arguement at all costs.

This is what I thought of.....:lmao:

I want to buy an argument."
"No you don't!"
"Yes, I do!"
"No you don't!"
"But I already paid you for it!"
"You did NOT!"
"Yes I did!"
"No, you didn't!"
"So why are you arguing then?"
"Ahh.... I could be arguing in my spare time..."

That wouldn't go over very well with me, either!

In general, playing the devil's advocate is ok with me as long as it isn't in excess and it's clearly stated up front. IE, trying to get a person to see the other side of the issue. But in the case of a spouse, they have a different role of listening to and supporting their spouse unless they personally have a stake in it or truly disagree.

On the discussion boards it becomes obvious quickly who signs up to just disagree. Again, if someone is really stating their views that's fine as long as it's done in a respectful manner, but that seems like a difficult request for some people.

I just told my DH a couple of weeks ago that, I wasn't sure he realized it, but that he argues with everything I say and he has for the last 19 years! He got a blank look on his face like he had no idea what I was talking about! So now, I am calling him on it when he starts up and he shuts right up!! :cloud9:
