Almost three in four people fear going to the dentist, with 16% avoiding dental surgeries altogether, according to a new poll by irishhealth.com.

Just curious if you have a fear of going to the dentist too?

Every day of my life... that's why I haven't been in...well I'd rather not say! :scared1:

YES!

I've got a tooth that's been broken since last December and I keep refusing to go get it fixed. Yesterday I had to take my 19 year old son for an extraction and I sat in the waiting room a nervous wreck from hearing the drills and suction.

I really need to get this taken care of and find a dentist who will knock me out to do it. It's not that I can't handle a little pain, but the anxiety is what kills me.

Yep, but not because of the pain or discomfort. I hate going because I know if anything is wrong it is going to be a huge bill even with dental insurance :scared1:

I always go without fail though. I have horrible teeth that cost me a fortune to keep up. I don't even want to see what my bill would look like if I actually skipped my appointments for any length of time.

I only fear the "what are they going to try to sell me this time?" They've been at me for a few years now to get $8k worth of cosmetic work. Now that I'm getting married, they've decided that I only "need" $670 of that...but it will only last 6 months to a year afterward :sad2:

You sound like me. I don't mind going to the dentist at all, it's the bill that I dread. We have dental ins too and I would hate to go without it.

That's me Pakey. I loathe hate and I'm scared to death of the dentist. I have to force, and I mean literally force myself to go to the dentist once a year.

My only dread is the bill. I have been very lucky in my dental experiences. They have always been about as positive as any time can be with a mouth full of tools and someone else's fingers can be!

I used to dread the dentist visit, but not anymore! I just wrote to a friend this morning, a former dentist, about my pleasant visit with my dentist the other day. I used to have bad teeth that needed lots of work. Now, ever since I began eating low carb, plus taking a few supplements like D3, magnesium, and fish oil I no longer seem to develop cavities or even tartar. This has been going on for around 5 years. The visit to the dentist the other day turned more into a social visit than a cleaning! I really like the change.

Recall that there was study yesterday about fish oil helping with gum disease.

Also recall this researchers work about the connection between dental health and diet.

::yes:: it's the one thing in life that causes me much anxiety :scared1:, yet I have no problems with drs and hospitals. We pay an arm and leg for good dental ins. and have a wonderful caring female dentist with excellent chair side manner. It's not the pain, as I've had mucho dental work, incl a bridge and couple root canals w/minimal pain. Sadly I still feel nauseated soon as I open the office door, get a hint of that sterile like smell and think of a simple cleaning  . Honestly, it's to the point I need to consider going to one who offers sedation . DH is the opposite, doesn't even require novacaine with root canal! Go figure! :confused3

No fear of going to the dentist for work. Just a fear of how much it's going to cost! :scared1:

Can't go. Can't even take my kids my husband has too. I literally am ill just thinking about the word.

I've had 1 tooth worked on 4 times to the tune of over 4000$$$

Yesterday the same *&*^ tooth started hurting again! I called the guy that did the work and he is referring me to an endodontist. That doesn't really help since my insurance is gone for the year.

I DREAD my appointment today! JUSt DREAD IT.

Fear as in phobia fear? Or are you saying do you "hate" going to the dentist?

I will be honest I don't look forward to it but I do go every 6 months.

Yes, I hate the shots and they usually don't work, so I feel awful pain and have to have more shots. I hate the x-ray's, too--they make me gag.

I USED to have a terrible TERRIBLE fear of the dentist that stemmed from a childhood dentist who was (no joke) nearly as sinister as the one from Little Shop of Horrors. It was so bad that I would hide the reminder cards the office sent and change the channel during toothpast commercials so it wouldn't remind my mom that I might be due for a checkup!

Years later, we switched to a new dentist who was wonderful, funny, and helped me get over my fear. i don't LOVE the dentist visits any more than I love a doctor visit, but I have no fear of them now and handle them with NO issues. Even having teeth pulled, drilled etc..

I voted yes, sometimes.. but probably for a silly reason: the way the toothpaste tastes. For some reason, it really grosses me out and makes me feel sick to my stomach. I always ask to see if I can have a different flavor or brand but they only have blueberry and bubblegum. Yuck.

Now, if we were talking about the orthodontist, I'd have a different answer: I hate going to the ortho (haven't been in quite some time) but wow, yeah, fear.

I used to hate going to the dentist until I found my present dentist. She is wonderful and has never hurt me during a procedure, and is very careful to make sure I'm comfortable at all times. Now going to the dentist is a pleasurable experience and it reminds me of going to a wilderness spa. :thumbsup2 The dental clinic is out in the country, overlooking a gorgeous lake with a fountain. The back side of the clinic has large plate glass windows so you get the whole wilderness experience. Wildlife is abundant there and I've seen deer and even a bobcat drinking from the lake. They feed the squirrels, birds, and geese, and they'll come and sit and eat on the window sills while you're having your teeth cleaned. :) The dentist will give you glasses to wear so you can see outside while you're laying down, and they have good music playing in the cubicles, too. Every person in the dental clinic is very friendly and cheerful and they're paid well to make sure their clients have a pleasurable experience while having their dental procedures.

My dentist is a little more expensive than others I've gone to in the past, but it is well worth it to enjoy going to the dentist instead of dreading it with a passion. I LOVE my dentist!
