Do you enjoy going to the grocery store?

Not really. Don't want to bump into anyone I know. Get irritated when someone blocks a shelf I need and they stand there forever. Also irritates when they block middle or aisle. Also irritates when lines are long and/or people cut. Like to do self check out but not all stores have it. Have to look at expiry dates really well as some stores like to sell expired crap. ANd I need my glasses to read the dates. Hate getting the wonky wheeled carts. Then you have to load into car and take cart back up (or put in cart return). Then lug it all into house (and our garage is a back alley garage so it is long haul to kitchen). Have to remember re-usable bags or dispose of the grocery store bags. And then finding space in our cabinets (we have no real pantry) which is always a pain. Oh, and trying not to buy all the junk food that you want to buy (ice cream, cookies, chips, candy). And trying to think of what's needed for meals. And I always always forget 1-2 things I need. Always!

Had to also add not being able to find something. The stores change things up too often. And then sometimes your item stops being stocked. Hate that. And right now many shelves are nearly empty with all the shipping issues. I use a Twinnings English breakfast tea in Keurig that was always at my stores and I could not find it for a couple weeks. Had to try some other type that turned out to have vanilla flavor added and that is gross as iced tea (I brew a keurig tea and put it in cup of ice with splenda). It's also kinda gross as hot tea too...not a fan. And it was like a 22 count box too. Ugghhh!

I enjoy grocery shopping- it is the paying for the groceries and putting them away part that I don’t enjoy 😂

This came up in another thread and I thought it might be fun to discuss.

I actually enjoy going to the grocery store if it's not too crowded. (I do not like shopping the week before Thanksgiving, etc.!) While I do get tired of the regular shopping, it's more about forcing myself to do some planning, actually go, and the unpacking and putting away that I tire of. I enjoy the walking up and down the aisles looking for things part.

We actually like it when we have to get groceries of any kind on a vacation because we enjoy seeing what is different. Especially if we go to a foreign country, we HAVE to check out a grocery store. Since we live in suburbia, I also find big city and/or small town grocery stores interesting.

How about you?

Could this thread have been inspired by my comment in the other thread about Annoying Littlle Things? If so, I'm honored. :worship::worship:

Not only do I enjoy grocery shopping, I enjoy putting the products away when I get home. DW often assists.

I like to perform The Grand Unveiling for DW, taking items out of the bags one at a time and ooohing and aaahing over them. OK, that's an exaggeration, but I hate when she peeks inside the bags before I'm ready to show them off.

The grocery store in town, I hate. If I want to prepare a decent meal, I can almost guarantee they won't have at least one of the things I need for the meal so then I have to figure something else out and go back and forth in the store trying to find what I need. It's expensive, too, and most of the employees are super grumpy.
I don't mind going to the next town over and their grocery store, but they recently rearranged their entire store so it takes me 3x longer than it used to.

I love it. I love being able to see the produce available and change my plans if there's something good that isn't always there, like savoy cabbage. I'm big on picking out my own meat, too. This all goes triple for restaurant supply stores and Costco. But . . . I've learned I can make due with curbside pickup, and I can grow my own veggies. I mostly do curbside pickup, but if I go in, it's right at opening with an n95.

This will be long, lol:

I hate everything about it. I'm not a foodie to start with. I mean, I enjoy a nice variety of food, but I'm fine with simple meals with basic flavors. I don't need a 5 star meal to be satisfied and would be perfectly fine to eat the same things over and over. My family would revolt, though, lol. I'm actually a really good cook, which comes in handy because everything we make needs to cater to the special diets in our family.

Me: diabetic, so low carb and grain free
DH: gluten allergy and supports me, so same as me
DD23: type 1 diabetic, so lower carb, though not as low as me
DD17: gluten allergy and super tiny, so needs extra calories
DD13: eats what we eat
bonus DD17: eats what we eat

We cook everything from scratch, and luckily DH works from home and really enjoys cooking, so we have fun in the kitchen. I hate the shopping though. The stores are loud and always seem crowded no matter when I go or what store I go to. Everything is so expensive, and our diet restrictions mean that we spend 2x as much as our mortgage for groceries. That hurts me big time, especially because there's not a dang thing I can change. There's only 1 overweight person in the house, so we really can't cut back much on food. We cook all from scratch, hardly any processed food, except for some snacky stuff for kids/teens lunchboxes. Nothing organic unless it's a similar price as conventional. We buy the cheapest food possible and it gets more expensive every time I go. We tried curbside and other shopping services during the pandemic, but things were out or produce/meat picked was awful almost every time. It was definitely a hassle on top of paying for the services. Has this gotten any better any recent months? And then, when you get home, you have to tote it in and find a place to put it, lol. It's just too much!

TLDR: I hate it!

Summerlyangel, I can't resist starting another spin off. Look for a thread any minute started by me on dietary needs in a family.

I do like it. Shopping is how I discovered purple cauliflower and purple potatoes that taste a bit like chestnuts. It's nice to see the seasonal fruits and veggies change through the year and to pick out my own flowers and produce. Sadly my pears kept getting bashed by Instacart but I still do it from time to time and use it 100% for my college student. I'll probably switch back now that Flu season is here.

Plus, I really like to people watch as I am shopping for my family because it tells me a lot about what is happening in my community. There is no other way to get a better view of a cross section of humans than to actually wade in and see what's going on, invaluable.

I do not. I’ve used curbside from the time it was available in my city(prepandemic.) The pandemic has solidified what was a sometimes use of it to an always. I’ll never go back to shopping in store. I hate even going in for a thing or two.

I don’t like to actually do the grocery shopping, but I love to wander every isle and look. I love to visit new/different stores when in another city. My dad used to do computer work for a local chain when I was growing up. He would often have to go into the stores to fix issues. We would often go with him and would wonder the isles as he worked. It is kind of nostalgic for me.

Oh, yes, I forgot about that. Watching others and looking what's in their carts is often the best part of going to the supermarket. I don't do it often, but on those days that I dawdle I usually make instantaneous guesses/judgments about people based on the contents of their carts.

Guy in his 40s with a dozen cheap frozen dinners? Probably divorced, never learned to cook, or doesn't have time to cook because he works two jobs to afford paying child support and/or alimony through the nose.

During Shop Rite's Can-Can sale. Some people load up on horrible canned vegetables. 24 cans each of peas, string beans, and mixed vegetables. :crazy2: Plus lots of Spaghetti-Os and other canned crap. And of course their carts also contain big bags of potato chips, Chips Ahoy, and Diet Soda.

Enjoy grocery shopping to see what new/different items are available. New products are being introduced all the time. With the covid situation, continue to wear a face mask, social distance, use hand sanitizer, etc. and shop during the week at hours when they tend to not be busy. Even before covid, our store had a hand wipe dispenser at the door which seemed like a good idea. Some items like fresh vegetables or meats I prefer to select on my own (are they ripe/fresh/etc.), so buying those things online/curbside delivery doesn't work for me. I don't look at other people's carts nor do I care what someone else happens to be buying.
