A friend of mine once stated that I "swear like a drunken sailor". I thought about it a moment and replied, with pride, that I was raised by drunken sailors.

My parents love this story and tell it all the time. They're power boaters now, but the rest still applies.

I curb my language around other people's children because I know some folks are uptight about it, but I don't bother around my own daughter. I'm proof positive that growing up around swearing parents will not, in fact, hinder your development.

Yes! b/c dgs's school deems "stupid" a swear word and for the olderrr life of me I keep using it; At least now that he is 7 he isn't quite as dismayed when I forget to use "silly".

I'm not surprised at all by your opinion. In my experience, people who talk like you say you do usually don't like it when others point out objectionable language.

ETA: If that makes me snobby, then so be it. I can live with that. My kids are not allowed to swear around me, though I am under no illusions about what my 17 year old says around his friends. I don't want to hear it.

As a general rule, not terribly much. At work only one rather mild word escapes. Quite commonly when discussing some of the individuals I contend with at work with friends outside work it's probably a little like the scene in a Christmas Story where I swear a streak that hangs over Lake Erie for a considerable time. Most people who know me are kind of surprised when a curse word comes out of my mouth other than that, although I'm not an angel by a longshot. I simply deal with some of the dregs of humanity at work and some things make my blood boil & we're off to the races.

Sometimes, I let one slip but I don't season my talk with expletives the way most of my friends and I did growing up in Philly. I think those words way more than I say them. If I didn't have kids, I would be worse. If I didn't have a husband who doesn't swear, I would be worse. If I didn't socialize with people and go to church with people who don't swear, I would be worse.

I find when I am back in Philly or South Jersey, I revert.

The worst word I say is crap, and it is very, very rare.

If "crap" is a bad word, then my answer is yes. But I don't consider it a bad word.

I feel awkward saying most of the words that are typically considered bad words, except for **** for poop. I am not even sure why that one is considered a bad word.

I just don't say many "bad words" because I can't make them come out of my mouth naturally. I grew up with them being considered "bad", and it's just not a habit I want to become comfortable with. Plus, I would have a really hard time turning it on and off depending on whose presence I am in.
Some of them, mostly the name-calling and sexual ones, I have no desire to start using. I think they are ugly and lack creativity.

I think people who believe intelligence is inversely related to swearing aren't very intelligent.

I swear like a sailor, and I have no intent on changing it. That being said, I think I have mastered the skill of controlling it when it's necessary, like in professional settings, when speaking to those I don't know, or within earshot of children. I have a few friends that don't swear at all, and while I curb my language a bit, I don't entirely bc it's who I am, take it or leave it; I can't justify censoring myself completely in a social setting. They still seem to like me.

But I do keep it under control when I'm around people that don't. Never crossed my mind that they were snobby. I just figured they didn't swear! Go figure I have no class and am uneducated!

Yes, I do.
Mostly when I'm frustrated while playing Candy Crush.
Unfortunately, other people in my household curse way more than I do.
(Ok, it's dh. One time I kept track of all his cuss words. )

ETA I think I shared this story once. I got a call from ds's gym teacher
who told me that he hollered something crude across the gym. When
the teacher confronted my son, he said we talk like that at home all the
time. When the teacher asked me if that was true, I answered yes. Oops!

I swear. If someone wants to say I'm uneducated or have no class because of it, oh well. Most people I know who have a big problem with it are annoying anyways so I make sure to swear in front of them.

But what the kids didn't pick up from me, they got from movies. t.v., then their friends.
