If so, I have 2 questions for you:
1. How long is your commute?
2. How do you pass the time?

I've been commuting to my job in NYC on the LIRR for more than 20 years. My commute is usually 45 minutes. I like to read, listen to my walkman and crochet. But I've also been napping more than usual lately--I've been working late and getting to bed late so I'm tired!

I take a bus and a train. My commute is about 45 minutes. I usually read a book or listen to my walkman during my commute. I've actually made some nice friends on the bus, and we go gab all the time, and go to dinner after work once in a while. It's a whole subculture on the bus :)

I take the Metra (suburban rail) in Chicago and my commute is only 25 minutes. I chat in the morning (but wish I could sleep) and play on my phone or read in the evening.

Missy1961 we take the same train line! We're practically neighbors, I live in Lindenhurst. My commute is an hour, been doing it for 13 years. I listen to my walkman, try to read or knit, but mostly...the train rocks me right to sleep. I am an insomniac, and honestly, the best sleep I get is on the train!

Hi neighbor! My morning train (7:11) starts in Massapequa Park, but going home (depending on how late I work I'm on the 4:52, 5:59 or the 6:33) we may be on the same train!

I work for the LIRR and I have only had to actually commute in to the city a handful of times but I do feel for those of you that do! I always said I could never be a commuter, to much sitting around and adding extra hours to your day!
Have you ever fallen asleep and ended up in the train yard?? I hate having to wake people up in the yard and tell them they missed their stops!!

No, I haven't, thank goodness! My dad commuted on the LIRR for 2 years and fell asleep a few times--but luckily he woke up at the next stop (Amityville).

In the morning's my trains start at Babylon, I usually am on the 6:47 or 7:15 (which stops in Massapequa). At night, same thing, depending on how late I work I am on 4:52, 5:13, 5:36 or 5:59...so it looks like at times we very may well be on the same train...

It is a small world after all!

aprilgail2; I have slept past my stop, but lucky for me the last stop is Babylon, only one town away. I can't imagine how horrible I would feel if I woke up in a train yard!

They've gotten better about waking people up in the station and getting them off the trains but sometimes they still end up in the yards...on the weekends its the wrost because they could be up there for a very long time before anyone goes up on the trains (hours!!). We have had people make their way to the west car after waking up alone on the train and get into the engineers cab and just start sounding the horn until someone realizes that they are stuck up there!!

I drive 40 minutes to the T's commuter rail, then take the train for about another 1/2 hour. I usually try and read a "fluffy" book, something relaxing and mindless. However, my days have become quite busy, so now I tend to snooze a lot.

I feel like I spend half my life on the NYC Subway. My commute to work in the morning is approximately 20 minutes depending on how efficiently the trains are running. Usually there is no hope of a seat and I stand at least half way to work. For this I carry my CD player. If I am lucky enough to snag a seat I have a book.

My commute from my day job to my night job or choir rehearsal is appoximately 45 minutes. From my day job I can usually grab a seat and then it is the same book or more usually lately a quickie nap. Luckily I have never fallen completely asleep and missed my stop.....who knows where I would end up here in NYC!!!!

I also take Metra into downtown Chicago. The length of my commute depends on whether I catch an express or not. If it's an express, it's about 26 minutes. If not, about 35 or 40.

I walk to the station and to work, so door to door my commute is usually 45 minutes.

I read to pass the time.

Fortunately it's a 7 to 10 minute walk from my house to the train and about a 20 minute ride. I always read the morning paper, but never finish it so I read the rest on the way home.

I take the Metra (suburban rail) in Chicago and my commute is over an hour. I chat in the morning or play on my 'puter. I drive for 15 minutes to the train, then the express train is 45 minutes, local is 1 hour, walk from the train to work for another 15 minutes...

Hey KarenC and littleclover - I am on the Metra NW line...what about you??

I have about a 10 min walk to the subway and about a 45 minute total commute (I switch subway lines en route). I usually read a magazine or a book.

I take the Metra (Rock Island) line to downtown Chicago. My drive to the train is about 15 min., train ride about 45 min. and then my walk another 15 or 20 min. For 12 years, I worked 5 miles from home so for me this is a long commute. But I LOVE working downtown so it's a trade off.

Hello to all you Long Islanders! I am from Queens so my commute is annoying! LOL! I actually take an express bus in. On a good day it takes about 30 minutes. It is worth the extra money. Coming home takes longer but it is more comfortable than that DARN E TRAIN!!!!!

I currently don't (now a sahm) but have in the past in the Boston area. At one point I drove to commuter rail, took the subway a few stops then took an express bus about 75 minutes. Another time I took two subways but each was under a 10 minute ride and total was under half an hour door to door going against commuters so only an issue coming home on red sox home games. Most recently working one day a week just a quick 10 minute bus ride. I do continue to take the bus frequently thruout the week with my two daughters and speak to several people many senior citizens who enjoy watching my kids grow but only take the subway on rare occasion now. Since Hubby is from midtown manhatten I've taken NYC metro a few times a year usually to Queens to visit great grammy and find one long ride to be harder then diving the ride up like I used to do.

I also take the LIRR. My commute is 50 min in the morning and 60 in the afternoon. It's all local going home, because I'm on the 3:34 which is non-peak. In the morning I sit with someone , so we talk. Going home I read the paper than try to take a little nap. I have to careful though, I've missed my stop twice because I overslept! I've been commuting for 17 years and it doesn't bother me. I still enjoy working in Manhattan.

I take an express bus into Manhattan every morning and take the subway on the way home. It takes about 40 minutes. On the bus I read the newspaper or close my eyes to pass the time. On the subway, there is always something interesting going on to watch!
