Do you carry your social security card in your wallet?

It is also a very bad idea to have your SSN on your driver's license

But if you opt to have your SSN removed from your Ohio driver's license, you have to show your SSN card whenever you renew your license.

I've noticed that our health insurance company no longer uses SSNs as patient numbers.

No I don't carry my SS card with me either. I have my number memorized and I keep the card in a safe place at home. I don't want to risk losing it.

No, you shouldn't carry it.
I don't have the number listed on my Drivers License either.

Our doctor and dentists tells us that they too need it to keep us straight from other patients. Sorry but they need better record keeping! It is against the law for any business or hospital or doctor to require a SS #. The only ones are state and federal agencies that can require that number. EVen the MVA can't ask for it anymore. My insurance, Aetna, no longer even asks for it as they finally figured out they aren't supposed to have it.

I never carry mine with me. It's locked away. Some people are suprised that I don't know my number by heart, but I've had no reason to. I work for my dad, and he has my number from our bank stuff. I also don't have it on my driver's license. We have the option in NH to not have it on there, just in their records. My doctor has never asked for it, at least not when I've been in for appointments.

You would think with all the identify theft insurance companies would get on the ball and do away with that practice.

Some insurance companies are already changing the member ID numbers. If yours does not you need to write directly to the insurance company and explain your concerns.

Its easier for people in the medical field to keep track of past patients with the SSN because that never changes. The PT may marry, divorce, or change their name for whatever reason but the SSN never changes. I do not know of anyone that contacts every single place they've ever been a patient or customer of to tell them of name changes.

I was told giving your child's SSN helps verify they are indeed your child. Say a child is taken by a person that does not have custody....providing the SSN at least confirms the child does indeed belong to you. Our schools also require the SSN every year at registration.

Welovedisney... I live in Roanoke too. Do you live in the city or county? We're in the county and never write the kids' SSN on permission slips. I can't figure out why they would need it so I just leave it blank. I don't think the teachers have ever noticed.

In the past couple of years I have been very careful with my SSN. I have heard that it is never supposed to be used for identification purposes, except by government agencies. I don't know how true that really is, but it's been working for me so far:rolleyes:

figment95,

Hello neighbor! We are actually in Bedford county just outside of Vinton. We just moved from the city last December. DD has always gone to either Bedford Co. or Rke. Co. schools (I work for Rke Co.) That's good advice about just leaving the SSN area blank. They have the birthdate and drs. name, so if there was an emergency that should be enough. Also, if it came down to it, I think they have the SSN on record in the office from when they first started school.

I actually got my drivers license changed on Monday. I had to go to the DMV to pay for my tags and since I was there I decided to change the address and take my SSN off. We need to order more checks soon, so I will take it off the checks also.

Having had my crackhead cousin steal my social security card and go on a crime rampage using my name, no, I no longer carry my social security card with me. And I advise anyone who DOES carry it with them to take it home and put it somewhere safe. ASAP. A crook can get anywhere if they have your ss #, I found that out the hard way. :(
