Do You Buy Deli Salads?

I don't buy deli salads at the grocery store very often, because of the high prices of them. But, when we go camping I sometimes do.

Last week I bought a pound of "sunshine salad" and it was $5.99/pound. :scared1:

The ingredients were crushed pineapple, mandarin oranges, miniature marshmallows, whipped topping and dry instant lemon pudding. I decided to buy the ingredients and make it myself. It tasted exactly like the deli's did, and I got a HUGE bowl of it for about the same $$.

So, do you buy salads from the deli at the grocery store or do you make your own?

If I could find any that taste good, I would. I'm pretty much too busy to make my own because I work out of the home full time so I will only make that sort of stuff for special occasions. But, I cannot find any type of potato salad, cole slaw etc that I can even tolerate at the deli.

Both. We have a few delicatessans (sp?) very close to each other and they each have great potato and macaroni salads. I'm not too big a fan of cole slaw so I can't comment on that. But I only like salads from the deli. Grocery store salads, taste horrible to me.

I've also made homemade tuna fish macaroni salad and potato salad that my mom has made. I used to also make a taco salad but haven't done that in years.

The only time I ever do salads, though, is when we are having a BBQ.

If I do I get some salads at Whole Foods or New Seasons Market. But it's fairly rare. If I'm cooking it's usually only for my mom and I or for my DFiance and I, so we'll either get a small amount of pasta/salad from the stores for the side dish because it's just harder to make those things for only 2 people. Usually though, we'll just have a spinach or a lettuce-y kind of salad which is very easy for 2 people.

I'm domestically challenged (hello, tag fairy), and I wouldn't dare attempt potato salad, so I buy it. I can do Cole slaw myself with a bag of mix and a jar of dresssing, so I don't pay deli price for that. I do pay major $$$ for the krab salad, and I know it is just fake crab and... something. Mayo? Miracle Whip? But I don't know what the something is, so I pay $6.99 a pound, because it is an amazing treat on Hawaiian rolls.

The OP's deli salad sounds like what we used to call Ambrosia. Easiest thing ever to make, mix 1 c. of each of: drained canned mandarin oranges; drained canned pineapple (I use chunks); vanilla miniature marshmallows; sweetened grated coconut; sour cream. We serve it as a side at Thanksgiving. It is very popular with little kids.

There is a particular red potato salad we buy from a deli. I've brought it to parties and people have asked me for my recipe. Even if I could make it & replicate it exactly, I would probably still buy it due to the time involved.

I do tell people what store its from. :goodvibes

Also, to make all that potato salad for just 2 people, it would go to waste. So buying just the amount I want is better.

Worked in a Deli for a while, so Nope, do not buy the salads.

Are you referring to Red Bliss potato salad? That is my FAVE! It's $2.99/lb at Hannaford's. I couldn't even attempt to make it myself.

Normally I hate deli potato salad (I'm picky about potato salad), but Walmart's Red Bliss Potato salad is great and only 1.99 a pound.

I only get deli salads if I'm in a crunch for something to bring somewhere and don't have the time or ingredients to make it -- Broccoli salad or something similar.

DH and I went to Ravinia a couple of weeks ago and bought a pound of chicken salad with us as part of the picnic -- very expensive, but, again, you pay for convenience.

.....waiting to hear back from the PP who says they'll never buy deli salads because they worked in a deli......:scared:

I regularly buy chicken salad. Just too lazy to make it myself.

Every now and again, I will buy DH potato salad. He is the only one that likes it, so we never make it, unless having/going to a party. He only eats a small amt.

No, I typically don't. I generally stay away from the deli. Not a big turkey or ham person.

There is a deli down the street from me and they have the best macaroni salad. Its the only mac sald I will buy.
When I go camping up north I go to a specific grocery store to get their deli potato salad. It is a small market, not gourmet but the salad taste like it is. I wish I lived near that store.

Because you have all of the recipes, right? Not because of yucky things that will make the rest of us unable to eat prepared salads for the rest of our lives, RIGHT?

A little of both;). I love the recipe for Ham Salad. So sinful.

I've never found any that I like, so I usually make my own.. The one exception would be a fruit tray - if I was feeling too lazy to peel, cut, and cube everything myself..:goodvibes

Not usually, but the other day I was in Whole Foods and I picked up a pound of some kind of cold cheese ravioli/asparagus/tomato salad on a whim and that was spectacular! I need to find the recipe.

I only make cole slaw myself, because I am picky about it.
I love several of the deli salads at Stater Brothers. Like many have said, I buy about 1/2 lb for just DH & myself or sometimes just me. I like the carrot raisin pineapple one for breakfast sometimes. And I love one that has spiral pasta, fresh spinach & tomato. They are expensive, but good.
