Do you bring your own bedding?

Using the fork provided at your table does indeed cross contaminate other dishes. You take that fork and serve yourself some peel and eat shrimp and then move on to take some fruit salad. You have contaminated the fruit salad with traces of shrimp which may not be a big deal for you but can kill me. Sorry but what you are doing is DANGEROUS and downright rude and inconsiderate to those who eat after you.
If you have a question about the cleanliness of the serving utensils ask that they be replaced. I have on a few occasions when I have seen them dropped and replaced on the serving dish. Not only were the utensils replaced but they entire dish. The reason for separate utensils for each dish is to avoid cross contamination of food.
And anyone seeing such behavior from a guest should point it out to the CMs so the person can be stopped and the contaminated food replaced.

I don't think you're going to get a response from Cookingmama. After about 20 people had already explained this to her, so was still sending me PM's arguing that she was doing nothing wrong. After I re-emphasized this again to her in a PM, I haven't heard back from her, and she hasn't been back to this thread. I hope that she realizes what she's been doing is dangerous and won't do it anymore.

Unfortunately, I think I read that Cookingmama said on another thread that some people were criticizing her on this thread so she won't be back. I guess she doesn't see that some weren't trying to criticize her but to make valid points about the cross contaminating of food. I hope that she will come back or at least try to understand where people are coming from.

I've read this whole thread tonight and I have to admit there have been many laugh out loud moments.

To answer the OP - When I travelled in my 20's I brought my own comforter - not because of germs but because I didn't particularly like hotel blankets and needed the warmth of my blanket.

Now, I guess I'm a better sleeper and have learned to change the room thermostat so I just use whatever the hotel has - including the comforter or duvet.

But just so you guys aren't wasting your money on your cleaning supplies (or transporting sheets, etc), I'll make sure to sneeze on the remote control, lick the glasses, dirty up the carpet, and roll around on the sheets and comforters with my dirty feet.

So she's left this thread because she's feels she being "criticized"? This didn't stop her from sending me unsolicited PM's on how her practices are perfectly reasonable. It was only after I spelled out the reasons why she shouldn't do this in such a way that it would be hard to argue with that she stopped sending them! Some people have a problem with admitting when they are wrong!

Several people have pointed out reasons this is a bad idea. However, there's a much, much easier answer to avoid picking up germs from serving utensils at buffets.

1) Don't eat at buffets.
Well, duh - I do feel silly (not angry, not embarassed, not that dawnball is showning off that she's smarter or has more common sense than the rest of us - even though it's apparent she is/does :teeth: - not insulted, offended, etc - just silly). THIS is such the basic, simple, obvious intelligent solution/response.

So, dawnball - where were you a week ago? :)

Just again, for the record - I am a foot flusher. But I don't want to be lumped in with the germaphobes. I don't care about getting germs on my hands. I just foot flush because public toilets always have such low levers that foot flushing is just what I've always done
Well, reasonable alternatives would be to squat down or lean over and flush... but since you're not going to change this habit, would you mind removing your shoe before you flush?

dbriggsq said:
So it doesn't bother you that you are endangering someone else's health by your practice. There are far more germs on the toilet floor and hence on your shoe which you are transferring to the handle that the next person will touch
Not just the toilet floor, but everywhere the foot-flusher has stepped recently (or not so recently, in the case of some substances).

When I'm dressed up fancy and have no inclination to reach my foot up there, I simply grab a piece of toilet paper and flush, tossing the toilet paper in on the way down.
Respectfully, why can't you do that every time, instead of using your shod foot? Not addressing this poster specifically, but anyone who uses the same procedure she does.

If the architect/plumber wanted people to flush with the foot, they'd have installed the flushing mechanism on the floor. This isn't rhetoric - this item DOES exist (ask bavaria).
BUT - you're going to wash your hands on the way out, so it's irrelevant if I flush with my foot or hand. Same germs
Nope. There's no bird poop on my hand; there's no leftover traces of protein spill on my hand (truly - if there had been any at any time, I'd have washed it off immediately); there's no lizard droppings on my hand; there are no traces of rotting food on my hand... and excuse me, but - a "standard" in any country for which hand is used for what activity? :rolleyes2:

With all these crazy dangers in the bathroom, it's really a wonder we're all alive.
While I strongly disagree with your method (yes, I did have to get that in ;)), it's not a wonder at all... at least regarding those of us who've built a healthy immune system by exposing ourselves to normal germs throughout our lives and NOT overabusing antibacterial products and antibiotics.
I foot flush because I don't feel the need to bend down to the lever as it's quite low on many toilets. And I don't want my face that close to the bowl.
So, don't bend - crouch. Bend at your knees, not at your waist (you're not lifting anything except your leg, so you're not putting unnecessary/unhealthy strain on your back).

I was in my 40s and here on the DIS when I first heard that people not only didn't do it that way - but that they'd never heard of doing it that way.
I was, let's see, fifty-three and about two months old the VERY FIRST time I EVER heard of people using their foot to flush the toilet. That was last month; one of my coworkers (whom I trust and believe) told me she knows some other of our coworkers - at least one, anyway - flush this way. THAT'S the only reason I'm not absolutely stunned at this conversation.

Wouldn't it be more effective to sneeze on the glasses and lick the remote? :umbrella:

Okay, I couldn't stop myself. There is now a poll on the Community Board http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2094733

Come vote! The poll closes February 28 at 6:55 PM.

I think you need to specify "pubic restroom" because I think people that aren't in this thread are confused.

If I wasn't a part of this thread, I would have chosen hand because that is how I flush at home and when there are normal toilets. so i think your results may not be totally accurate.

Oh, I totally agree. If she wants to sanitize everything that she comes in contact with that's her choice. But when she decides to do this at the risk of another person, well that's just wrong. I wonder if one of her family members had an allergy and they got ill due to cross contamination, her posts might be a bit different.

I just did - thank you, and thanks also to the other people from this thread who've posted over there and made the same suggestion.

I especially like the two posters who think we're playing cards :teeth:

I think you mean public. ;)

Holy bananas! I was just thinking of the same thing last night when I went to bed--what about bedding & pillows-last time we went down - I had a terrible sleep-I mean terrible. I was wondering if maybe I should put on a plastic mattress cover (like what are they 2.00-Disney can keep them) but just think how MANY people slept on those beds (forget about the kids having accidents-and mine did!-but I had one of those baby wetproof things under him) So if I bring the plastic things to cover the beds, waterproof pad under each child & my on sheets and my own pillows--what about blankets?? That's like a suitecase full. Maybe no blankets-and I do bring down a big thing of Clorox wipes & lysol.

My DH said the very same thing tonight! He's wondering if they have plastic mattress pad covers on the beds. He's worried about mites from other peoples skin. Maybe I should just give up and bring a large sleeping bag.

this is the best yet!!

I went to my meeting tonight and here are my results: 3 out of 9 are public restroom foot flushers and the rest of us had never heard of it before. They were just like me and were splitting their sides open with laughter.
