little balls or big balls......someone said that they do not know what candlepin bowling is........I could not believe this....
sooooooo big balls or little balls?
I didn't know what candlepin bowling was until I moved to Massachusetts. Kind of reminds me of skee-ball, like in the arcades, with those little balls and no finger holes!
Candlepin Bowling is like pumba said kind of like skeeball but a normal sized alley and the ball is about 2 or 3x's the size of a skeeball. Also the pins are tall & skinny versus the shorter, chunky pins used for big balls.
Candle pin is the same as duck pin. I didn't know there were any of those left. We only have big ball bowling out here! (This whole thread is slightly odd!)
However, what we do have here in central Canada (which I assumed was everywhere) is 5-pin bowling. Smaller balls similar to candlepin, but with regular shaped pins, just smaller than in 10-pin bowling. From what I read on the Net, 5-pin is also called duckpin.
Yes, candlepin bowling is pretty much a New England thing. I've never bowled with the big balls before. My nieces and nephews love bowling on the nights when they turn out the light, and use the flourescent balls.
Someone said Candle pins are the same as duck pins - Not true.
Duck pins are shorter than normal 10 pins but have the same overall shape. The duck pins have a rubber bumper around the largest part of the pin - this is so the little bowling ball can't fit between the pins.
Candle pins are the same height as 10 pins but are more or less the same diameter from top to bottom. You use a small ball which is the same size as a duck pin ball.
Candele pin bowling is scored differently than 10 pin or duck pin. Scoring (spare, strike) for the first two balls in a frame are the same between all three types of bowling. However in candle pin you get a third ball in a frame which enable you to score a 10 (but it is not a mark) Also in candle pin bowling the pins that are knocked down stay on the lane and help to knock down additional pins on subsequent throws.
Also in candle pin bowling the scoring sheet is from top to bottom (not left to right) and you play a string as opposed to a line in 10 pin bowling.
We have a few duckpin lanes in Rhode Island, one within two miles of my house.... wait... EVERYTHING in Rhode Island is within 2 miles of my house lol
candlepins are almost exclusive to Mass NH and Maine as well as New Brunswick Canada. It's fun but very frustrating. You can throw what looks like a perfect shot and knock down just one pin! ARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bowl with both big balls and little balls. We have candlepin bowling 5 minutes from my house in Webster MA. Havent been in a while. We were actually thinking of bringing the boys there this weekend. It will be there first time and we figured it would be easier with the small balls.
when we go to Plainfield to visit relatives......what an awesome town and I love the chagaug a gog lake thingie.....I have it someplace written down will find it some time.......are yuou near Danielson and wauregan and Pommes fritte and plainfield....
Well, I Much prefer ten pin. I've been on leagues forever. Unfortunatly tho here in Concord (NH) there is only candlepin so that is what I bowl now. I suppose its for the best because I have a bad back and I just don't think I could throw my 14 pounder anymore
