Do you believe that we (humans) are mostly good?

If you beleive Hollywood and some of the movies they put out, the bad people far outweigh the good, and that most people put in the right circumstance would save themselves before others.

I don't see that. I watched a movie a few weeks ago, were a virus took out most of the population. A handful of people were immune, or hadn't been exposed. Whenever they survivors would run into other survivor's, it was survival of the fittest. Instead of working together, there was no trust(they believed everyone else was infected). Nobody would help each other, and some even killed. I don't think humanity would end up like that. At least I would like to believe it wouldn't.

I watched The Dark Knight for the 1st time last night, and I want to believe the ship scene is how we really are. Even the hardened criminals refused to push the button. The man who was so sure the prisoners deserved to die over the upstanding citizens couldn't bring himself to push the button.

I think if it came to survival as a unit, we would band together, not kill each other to save ourselves.

Oh yes it would history alone has proved this, in the time of the black death anyone surviving (ie children) would be left to die because people where just plain to scared to go in. Fear of the unknown would keep people seperate.

I'm not so sure anymore. I think there is good in *most* but not all people, and it's all at varying degrees. We live in an affluent area where it's all "me, me, me" at the risk of others people's safety (i.e. texting and driving, very aggressive driving) and it's all about conspicuous consumption. Greed, gluttony, and vanity seem to have taken over people's lives. It's really pretty sad. Big houses, expensive cars, and everything "looks" perfect, but theres no real sense of community and no willingness to help out one's fellow human being.

I think some people are good, and some are bad, and many are a combination at different levels. We all know people like this. I have someone related by marriage to me that loves gossip, loves to say horrible things about people, and actually thrives on being a mean person. Laughs about causing misery. I know other people that honestly really genuinely care about others and care when others are suffering and are truly giving and kind from a genuine real place. I think we have a free will and we decide whether we want to be good or bad, kind and loving, or selfish and greedy. I think most people that are in power now are bad, many have gotten there from greed and selfishness. I think we promote this in our culture unfortunately now. My real point is that being a "good" person needs to come from a genuine place, not done bc they are afraid of "going to hell" but a genuine place.

I think humanity has shown some of its darkest days (i.e. Death camps, slaughter of children, etc.). But I also think humanity, as a whole, can do wonderful things and show absolute passion for their fellow man. I saw this first hand while at my brothers side at Walter Reed during his first few weeks in ICU and subsequently Ward 57. While you saw the effects of man's cruelty on display the actions of the men who were effected went far beyond the kindness and love I have ever witnessed from strangers.

There will always be bad people. But there will always be good people and I think as long as humanity can strive for something "bigger than ourselves" than I do think it will be ok.
