i went to pick up my tickets for seaworld from caa (great price), and she mentioned i should get health coverage insurance for our trip, i totally forgot about it, do you always get it?

Yup, we always get medical travel insurance. Our OHIP coverage does not cover outside of Ontario. The cost of medical expensives having to pay out of your own pocket can be extremely expensive. Also, the cost of medical travel insurance is very inexpensive and our health is definitely worth every penny of it :)

great thanks, caa said it would be 48.88 for the 4 of us for 8 days, so that is pretty good.

It is a must! I had to use the insurance a few years back (I was hospitalized for 3 days and my bill would have been over $10,000). Even when you go to the US for one day, it is essential.

Good decision to get it!:thumbsup2

We have had a hurricane, hospital trips due to being drugged, injuries on vacation and luggage lost. IT is the best money we spend on a trip whether we use it or not...unfortunately we have used it a few times too many. hahahaha

We have good out of country coverage through our work and I would never consider leaving the country without it. I've heard stories of people who went shopping for the day in Buffalo and had a heart attack/were in a car accident etc and they are out thousands.

DH has coverage through his work, so we never get extra health insurance.

I would never leave the country without travel insurance! That would be beyond foolish.

Luckily I am now covered from my work health insurance. Before that I use to pick up a Blue Cross policy.

We also have coverage through DH's work, but it's on a reimbursement basis, so I usually purchase an annual travel policy through Pacific Blue Cross also.

Always. And yes, we've had to use it about five times in the last 10 years. Maybe more.

We've had major flu, sinus infections, lost luggage, broken bones, broken tooth, etc.

You might want to consider buying coverage for a year if you travel over the border a few times a year. We buy family coverage for $140 that is good for a year and covers the whole family for travel up to 2 weeks at a time. Between family trips, business trips for DH and day trips to Buffalo we are in the States at least 4 times a year so it's cheaper for us to buy it that way. My DH went to an ER in Tampa via ambulance, had a CT scan, some bloodwork and a few other minor things done for him and the bill was $3000 which insurance paid for 100%.

Always! You don't want to be caught in the U.S. without coverage
We get our annual policy with CAA.

Don't leave home without it. My DH had kidney stones when we were in Hawaii a few years ago which he had to have lasered while we were there. The bill for everyone involved from the ambulance to the surgeon/ urologist was over $30,000. :scared1: Yup, was glad we had insurance. :)

I have medical coverage for OOC at work BUT having said that, I always get extra through either CAA for an entire year, or through my medical carrier.

When reading the fine print and what my work coverage might actually cover, it is no where near what one would need. And it's on a reimbursment only. You still have to pay upfront....which is very expensive in the states.

Through CAA, for a full year, costs me around $85. Allows me to go over the border for a day shopping, or for a full trip. It's great seeing as I live 15 min away and go over often. I never worry that something will happen and I am not covered.

I have coverage through work but like a previous poster it is reimbursement. I always get full coverage from RBC including cancellation, interruption and medical.

My neighbour (who did have insurance) received an anaesthesiologist bill for $15,000. She sent it off to the insurance company and had no problems, the total billing was close to $100,000 if she had to pay it herself.

Yep, insurance is a must. Like many others, we buy yearly family coverage at AMA/CAA for just over $100. It's a small price to pay for something that has cost people their homes when the unforeseen happens.

My MIL lives near the US border and visit the States weekly. She takes out a yearly coverage with CAA. She was picking someone up at the Detroit airport and tripped over a speed bump at the airport. Cost of the ambulance was $800 and her treatment at the hospital was $5,600 and that was not a stay in the hospital.

We have medical insurance through work. I always take trip cancellation, luggage, trip intruption and medical insurance. I figure if one insurance company does not cover something then the other company will.

Even if we're just going over the border for a weekend we make sure we have it. Had to use it last Disney trip and using it was totally easy. We called a 1-800 number and 2 hours later a doctor was at our hotel room. No charge for the doctor or medication he prescribed.
