Do we still go?

I previously posted that my husband had his foot ran over by a forklift.
It crushed the tip of the big toe & he is in a lot of pain. This happened on Tues. We are suppose to fly out on Sat.

His extened family is going on this trip as his parents have paid for the entire trip for all of us. We do have insurance so we could cancel if we want.

My husband still wants to go but I can tell he is doubting whether he will be able to do anything. We have two kids DS6 & DD4 who have been looking forward to this trip for about a year now.

We have everything lined up so that he will be in a wheelchair the entire trip. The doctor said he could go but he might not enjoy the trip because of the pain.

What would you do, would you still go or not?

First, he shouldn't have to be in a whole lot of pain. There are meds for that! Unless there is a reason he can't take them, he should get some, and do it!

Second, the wheelchair is the big thing - it's a tremendous asset. I once had to travel through the parks that way and it was fine. As many have posted, WDW is very accomading of that sort of thing.

I vote for go but, of course, you guys have to make that call.

I still want to go but I want him to be able to enjoy the trip a little bit & I am worried that he might end up spending the entire vacation in the room. (I think he is going just to make the kids happy because they would be crushed if we didn't go & if that means he is the room entire time, he would still go.)

I just want reassurance that we are making the right decision.

I say Go, Go, Go! If he is going to make the kids happy, then he'll probably be better off watching them have a good time than if he stayed at home. Also, I find that being out and about sometimes makes you "forget" about how much pain you're in. As long as the pain is being "managed", I say go for it!

With that said, I am VERY SORRY that happened - especially right before a trip! Hope he feels better!

If he stays in the room MOST of the time, would that be so tragic? I mean, being in DISNEY hurt is better than being at HOME hurt..right?
maybe he can join ya at the end of the day when it's cooler, and less crowded. For my kids, i'd go...then again, There is not much that could keep me away..lol

Ouch! I can kind of sympathize, a little. Dated a guy a once that shot off one of his toes while hunting (don't ask, somehow "forgot" the safety...) That was about a week before we were supposed to go to a big new years eve bash, dancing and all. We didn't have the option to cancel, so went anyway (he did't want to cancel either). While a bit difficult to dance, we managed to have a good time anyway. Glad we went...

Does he have any kind of pain meds? If he wants to go, I would still go. But would try to rent an electric scooter at the parks if you can! My step mother blew out her knee three days before we made our trip in August (she actually had to have surgery on it a short time later). My dad had a wheelchair for her, and pushed her aound the in the MK the first day. Very tough for him (had his own medical problems to deal with, too)...the next day DH surprised her, and rented a scooter, best money spent the entire trip! No pushing, and she was able to still enjoy herself. She still had pain, but was better able to deal with it because she didn't also have to worry about my dad hurting himself. Even got brave enough to try some rides!

You might have to take a few more breaks throughout the days, but fun can still be had...

I also say you guys should GO! :moped:

The PP is right - he should not be in a lot of pain! Pain is not necessary to healing - it causes stress on the body and that is BAD! Get him some pain meds (and make sure he takes them!). Keep his pain managed, elevate the foot when he's not on it, get him an ice pack, a cool set of wheels, and HAVE A GREAT TIME! He can have Mickey Bars and watch parades - that is always a good prescription!

As someone who fractured her foot at WDW in May and spent the remainder of my trip in a wheelchair let me just say this: GO, GO, GO. As posted above, he will be miserable at home, especially knowing he disappointed the kids. Get some drugs, go to your local health rental store and get one of the lightweight chairs - it says time waiting for sky caps and trying to rent at WDW - insurance will pay for it. The kids will end up wanting to ride in Daddy's lap and he will become yet another "Disney attraction" for them. And if he does need time in the room that is fine too - he will still be with all of you :Pinkbounc

If he can get the pain meds, and he is OK with going and being in a wheelchair, absolutely GO FOR IT !!! Sounds like you've been planning for a long time, and while your kids will get over it if you don't end up going, I would be very hardpressed to cancel a trip. I've gone sicker than a dog and been magically cured on those trips :teeth:

Now remember, most of us here are Disney-Freaks, so of course most of the answers will be to go ... but maybe that's why you asked us here instead of perhaps taking a poll at work where people "don't understand" :rotfl2:

He does have pain meds that he is taking but still has the pain.

We have to use a wheelchair because the leg has to be elevated & we can't do that on a scooter. (We already have the wheelchair & work. comp. paid for it)

As far as pushing him around there are 7 other adults besides me that have offered to help push him. So that shouldn't be an issue.

You guys are making feel better about going. THANK YOU!!!!

I totally agree with this. We were scheduled to go to WDW last January and DH got dramatically worse about 3 wks prior(he has severe lung/heart disease.) He was on disability and portable oxygen, but he still wanted to go--it was a special occasion for the two of us.

So off we went, with "R2D2" strapped in the back seat(that's what the O2 tank looks like :rotfl: ) My DH said he'd rather be disabled in Disney World than anywhere else. There were times when he couldn't keep up. He used a wheelchair. He was breathless. He had to take a lot of naps. But in the end he was so happy we went! It was such a fun trip, certainly different from other trips, but really we have great memories from it.

If your hubby is game, ya'll go. Let him do whatever he needs to do to enjoy the parks. If that means he skips a day or two, fine. You can go with the kids and meet up with him at dinner. He would maybe enjoy going with them to the pool(no weight-bearing!) Maybe the Grands can take the two kids one afternoon and you & DH go over to GF for a massage, or tea. Just the two of you...

Go. If you don't he may (be like me) and mope around the house and feel even worse. Given a choice I would rather be sick or injuried in Disney World where I can have a little fun than be stuck at home where all I will do is think about the fun I should be having if not for the turn of events.

If he can stand the pain, I'd say go.

Getting around Disney in a wheelchair is not very difficult; our DS9 is disabled and in a chair and we have minimal problems (except for the occasional rudeness of other guests).

It's actually easier to push him around Disney than any park or attraction we've ever been to. Almost all of it is flat (like most of Florida! ;) ) except for a couple of areas in MK like BTM and SM.

The biggest thing to watch out for, for someone who's otherwise well, are the people who (for whatever reason) tend not to "see" the wheelchair and trip over you! There's a slight chance of getting that already hurt toe stepped on! :earseek:

Another vote for going if his pain can be managed with meds & they probably can. You might really want to consider an ECV instead of a wheelchair for the parks though. That's going to be an awful lot of effort for someone to push him around and, not being used to doing it, that can be very tiring even if the adults in your party take turns with it. Your DH isn't used to maneuvering himself in a wheelchair either so his arm strength probably isn't built up to last touring the parks under his own power. Just something to think about...

I hope you all get to go and have a nice trip. Let us know what you decide. :)

I just posted about touring WDW in a boot for an ankle problem. I had surgery about 7 months ago and know it would have been very difficult even in a wheel chair the first several weeks after surgery. I didn't want to be bumped at all. If he is still in pain with the meds he has ask his Dr to give him something stronger. Between the ankle surgery and C/S I have been on several different types of meds and some work better than others. Also, if the pain meds make him sick ask for something for nausea. Sounds like you have plenty of adults to help push. The pain would be unbearable if he can't keep it elevated for the swelling. Good luck...I really sympathize with your situation.

One week before our family trip in 2001, my brother-in-law fell off a ladder at home and hurt his back. The doctor said nothing was broken, just terrible bruising and a bad sprain. He loaded him up on pain meds, and told him to go and have a good time. Well, thankfully, he listened to the doc. We wouldn't let him drive, of course, but he was blissfully medicated to the point where he still had mild pain, but not enough to ruin a long-planned trip. Tell your hubby's doc to increase the pain meds, get yourselves an ECV and have a great time. The worst thing is he may not feel like spending all day every day in the parks, so he can sit by the pool under a shady tree and just enjoy the warm Florida weather.

The ironic thing about your husband's injury is the same brother-in-law I spoke about above also got run over by a forklift at work. Almost lost his foot because of it, but he's doing just fine now. Tell DH to watch out for ladders once he's well!!

Thank you all for your input. I have talked to my husband again & we are definitely going.

He is trying another pain med today & it seems to be working better than the other one he was on & this one is not making him sick.

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN!!!

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who encouraged us to still go on our trip.

We had a wonderful time & my DH still rode everything. We made the right choice & I am so glad we went.

THANK YOU AGAIN!!!
