DS5 just started soccer. The team they played yesterday has a hard core coach. He, and the parents, were constanly yelling at the kids during the game. At one point, we heard him say as a threat to the team, "Do we all need to do shin sprints after this game!?!" These are 5 year olds!! Kindergartners!!! --and they were winning the game (by about 15-0, lol) so I'm not even sure what he was mad about :sad2:

Thank goodness DS has a wonderful coach who just wants the kids to have fun. I am going to have to get DS on video. Instead of running around the field, he skips :lmao: He's having fun, that's for sure :)

What are "shin sprints"? My dds have played soccer for years, my dh coached, and I never heard of shin sprints? :confused3

I'm glad he is having fun but he really shouldn't be skipping around the field if he is supposed to be playing. I agree the other coach is way over the top but there is the opposite and not even trying to play right is that. If he doesn't want to play he shouldn't and 5 is old enough to follow rules and play right.

Sounds like the football team my 4th grader played yesterday. They scored 2 TDs in the first quarter. Then when we got one, the coach was screaming at the team. BTW, they went on to get 2-3 more TDs and that was our only one.

And yeah, it's wind sprints. The kids have to run from one side of the field to the other back and forth for a set amount of time. Usually doled out as a punishment. :rotfl: But, I agree, way harsh for 5 year olds.

lol, come ON--they are 5 years old! Sheesh!

And he's going after the ball....btw....he's just skipping instead of running....he's out there having fun, not acting like it's going to be his future.......

I agree so many coaches can be rough on the little ones. When DD13 was in kindergarten there was a little girl on her team that would do cartwheels on the soccer field every chance she got. The coach would just remind her that the field wasn't the place to do cartwheels, after reminding her about 100 times she eventually stopped but, the season was pretty much over at that point!

Softball was a different story. If they didn't do well in practice (especially if they fooloed around too much) the coaches would make them run laps around the field. I think this started in first grade and many coaches still use running laps as a punishment in softball.

DD13 played on the school basketball team for 4 years (grades 5 thru 8) and the coaches favorite punishment was doing suicides (a running/sprinting thing)
