Do we need a rental car for this trip?

Didn't know where to post this....

I just did a couple quick searches for rental cars and am getting $59 or so a day for 8 days not counting any discounts. It's going to be $500+. I'm wondering if we need a car at all...or for maybe only a day. We could use pub trans and or shuttles. Thoughts?

Tuesday -Fly into S.Diego, stay at Comfort Inn Hotel Cir. (take shuttle?)
Wednesday-San Diego Zoo (3 miles away, public transportation?)
Thursday-Sea World (3 miles away, public transportation?)
Friday-Pick up car, drive to legoland.
Saturday-Beach day, drive to Anaheim HOJO's. (Drop off car?)
Sunday-Dis
Monday-Dis
Tuesday-Dis (either stay at HOJO's or at LAX. Take shuttle to LAX)
Wednesday-Flight out at 11am

So $500 for car rental or

Maybe $60 car rental for 1.5 days, $80 each way for shuttle (it's $20 a person right? Do they charge for 5 and under?) then publ trans costs $40? don't know the costs..would total $260 vs. the $500.

So questions are...I was told there was public trans in the hotel circle area San Diego. Is this true? Would you take it, does it run often, etc.? Or is it worth it to pay double for the convenience?

I'll also be picking up in San Diego and dropping off at LAX. I guess they upcharge for different pu and drop off.

Also, do you go by phone or online? I just did a couple of online searches.

Yikes, that's pricey! I'm looking at a rental for 7 days getting it at Burbank and dropping it off there too. I think I'm looking at around $150. I'd keep looking around!

You could call the SD hotels and ask if they have drop off shuttles or some such thing.

SD is not know for good public transportation.

We just spent 2 weeks in April and only paid $205 for the whole time and a full size car so keep looking and I would recommend a car, it made life really easy for us.

We booked thru priceline.com, but try travelocity.com and carental.com. I booked the car when we booked our trip two months before we left. I cancelled that reservation 3 times because it kept getting lower in price, book 1-2 weeks before and try the "name your price" thru priceline.
