Do we get any special upgrades?

I noticed on the non-dvc member threads that people get spcial room upgrades, and I was wondering if we do as well. I noticed they have special codes they share, and some have been moved to Conceirge level. Do we ever get anything like that. Is there an inside secret to getting the special level rooms? I would love to make this a special thank you trip full of surprises and that would be a very special one. Thanks in advance!!!:flower3:

My DW and I have been members since 2003....we go a couple of times a year....off peak....and have never been given any upgrades or a better location than we booked....not to say they don't...but we have never....

DVC really only upgrades if your unit is unavailable due to a maintenance issue, and there is no other similar nit available. DVC operates at high capacity, it is the way the system was designed, and the only way it truly "works", thus there are very few vacancies that can be used for upgrades. Plus, any room not reserved by points is turned over to cash reservations at 60 days out.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but upgrades are extraordinarily rare at DVC resorts. It's a timeshare, and the resorts operate differently than the non-DVC resorts. The only way you'll get an upgrade is if there's a major maintenance problem and there's nowhere else for them to put you....for instance, the studio they've assigned you to has a plumbing issue that can't be fixed quickly, all of the other studios are occupied, and they have no choice but to put you in 1-bedroom villa.

To answer some of your other questions..

Upgrades at the non-DVC resorts are nowhere near as common as they appear to be from the posts on these boards. Of course, people who get an upgrade on vacation are going to come back and post about it; no one bothers to post that they got the room category they reserved. It makes for a very skewed picture.

Upgrades at non-DVC resorts happen for a couple of reasons....operational needs of the resort (evening out room counts for housekeeping, rotating rooms out for maintenance), and the occasional 'pixie dust' upgrade that CMs can give. There's no special trick to it, there's nothing you can do to make it happen. It's a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

The codes you've heard people discuss are discount codes for those making cash reservations; they have nothing to do with upgrades, and they're of no use to DVC members.

OK I have to share that we did get an "upgrade" one time. We had a bad experience once on a vacation we took about 8 years ago and I wrote a letter about what happened. (A very nice letter, but just detailing the problems so they could maybe change it so others don't have the same issues.) So they gave me a special phone number to call a few days before checking in and told me to ask the cast members who answered the phone to read the letter in my file. When I called they sort of acted like they didn't know what I was talking about and I felt really stupid. But when we checked in we got to stay in a Grand Villa for one night. I am sure that this is a very rare thing though.

IMO it is unreasonable to even ask for an upgrade with a timeshare unless one is prepared to pay the cash difference.

There is no "Conceirge Level" within DVC. We were once upgraded when we checked in from a standard view studio to a preferred view studio. It was during a slow time of year and may well have been something to do with a maintenance or housekeeping issue...I don't know. It was nice, but not a huge deal.

There are a very small number of concierge villas at AKV; those are the only DVC concierge rooms at WDW.

Some of the upgrades people may be referring to are when DVC members stay at non-DVC Disney resorts using points. Less people may be doing this now, b/c of the change to add a $75 (not sure the exact amount) fee on top of using A LOT of points to stay at a non DVC Disney resort.

We have been upgraded twice using points & both times were amazing:

Once at AKL a month after it 1st opened we were upgraded to the top floor non-Concierge, but one w/ the bigger balconies right next to where the giraffes eat. My son met the manager in the lobby while we were checking in & they became buds. We met the head chef at Jiko. We were surprised that it was their grand opening ceremony & the cast from Broadway's LK had been brought down for it. We were only there for 3 nights.

The 2nd time was this past February. We were booked to stay at GF for 2 nights midweek & then move to our desired resort BWV for 3 nights. This was for my mom's 80th b-day & she's slightly disabled but refused to act that way. She can't walk for long distances. I sent a fax requesting politely if possible, could we have a room closest to an exit to the main building where we'd be going to catch the monorail. I also had pre-ordered a special b-day cake from the GF Bakery as a surprise to be delivered to the room.

Maybe it was b/c of her b-day, but we were upgraded to concierge (closest building & closest 1st floor room to concierge area). It was the most wonderful experience ever.

The Concierge Manager told me that at the last minute they would rather upgrade a DVC member to a more expensive room, b/c they are more likely to be able to rent the cheaper room we had reserved to someone who shows up last minute. He said DVC members are their best ambassadors who will likely go home & tell everyone about their incredible experience.

You can't ask for an upgrade, but when those surprises happen, be very appreciative to all the CMs.

Thank you, reading that made me feel like there is hope, lol. They are sweet stories.

I reserved a studio at BWV, checked in & went to the room they gave me.
It was a 1 bedroom! :dance3:

I didn't ask for an upgrade and didn't ask if they'd made a mistake!
Just enjoyed it and wished the ressie was for a longer visit!

Can you share some of that pixie dust so I can have my BWV upgraded to a 1 bedroom? Thanks.

Don't get your hopes up, DVC upgrades are very rare. I've probably had 15 to 20 DVC stays and never got one.
