Do upgrades (surprise or requested at the port) still happen?

Just curious. We have two inside staterooms booked but I can't help but notice that there are two veranda staterooms directly across the hall from us that are currently open. Any chance of an upgrade???

They still happen, but probably not from an inside all the way to veranda, and making a request at the port won't upgrade you. You would need to go to the desk and see what the cost is to upgrade, and then pay it.

Most likely if it's a pixie dust situation, they'll move someone from an oceanview into the veranda rooms, and then people from inside to oceanview.

After you check in at the port, you can go to the supervisor's desk to ask about upgrades. You will pay an upcharge for this, but it would be a lesser amount than if you call DCL the day before the cruise and upgrade to those rooms.

Pixie-dust upgrades (as in "Surprise! when you check in, you're in different room) do happen, just not as often as it may seem here on the boards.

Generally "upgrades" only occur with GTY rooms (not really an upgrade as you are guaranteed at least that level of room, if not higher). I have heard of some being upgraded otherwise but usually only if there was a reason DCL had to take a room out of service for some reason and, even then, the upgrade would likely not cross categories from inside to ocean view let alone a balcony room. If the cruise isn't too full, though, a port upgrade at a reduced price may be possible.
