Has anyone ever booked a room and been upgraded to a bigger room? If so it doesn't cost any extra points, right?

Can you ask for an upgrade at the desk and not be charged more points?

TIA,
Jennifer

If you ask for an upgrade, you will be charged the extra points. The only way you can get upgraded is if the villa you reserved is not available because it was taken out for maintenance or some other issue at the last minute. They will try to put you in a similar room, possibly even in a hotel room at a connected hotel (like BWI and BWV) rather than upgrade you to a larger room.

If you book a room on cash, you may get upgraded for no extra cost, but it is usually for shorter stays, like a night or two.

999 times out of 1000, you will get what you reserve.

The only "upgrade" I have ever received was from a standard view to preferred view at BWV which wasnt asked for nor was I charged points as the standard view I was scheduled for was put into "maintenance" the day I was checking in.

No! Not unless disaster has struck in the room you are suppose to have and they really, really don't have anywhere else to stick you!

I was also upgraded from a Standard view at BWV to a Preferred view of the back of Leaping Libations. We were put in a handicapped room, but the view was much better than a standard view.

It happens rarely as pure luck, usually due to some issue such as maint. If you ask at check in and it's available, you can and will be charged the extra points. Asking for a free upgrade for DVC using points is inappropriate in my book.

This happened to us at VWL. We checked in at 11:30 p.m and were told that they had some kind of a problem with our studio and upgraded us to a one bedroom for all of our 5 day trip.

We were upgraded at AKV from a savannah studio to concierge 3/2008, but it was due to bees on the balconies.

We were upgraded from a std studio to a 1 bedroom preferred at BWV. Not sure what the reason was and I didn't ask too many questions because I was so excited and couldn't believe it was happening! That's the only time it's ever happened to us and I know it's a very rare thing so we really appreciated it.:goodvibes

We have only been upgraded once from a standard 2BR to preferred 2BR at BWV.

We were upgraded from a standard studio at BWV to a 1bd. preferred view. The upgrade fairy dusted us with pixie dust last Sept., so it does happen. I don't think it happens very often. It didn't cost us any extra points.

We were upgraded several times at SSR from a studio to a 1 bedroom but I'm very sure this is because we were cash guests as opposed to using points. (a very smart sales tactic if you ask me!:thumbsup2) Sure made us check out DVC after our first upgrade although we never bought into it.

I think after staying there so many times and being upgraded, the last time we stayed we got a studio (which is what we had booked each time), I bet they saw our name and said, "hey those people again, they haven't bought into DVC after upgrading them several times, no more upgrades"...LOL!!!!:lmao:

That reminds me of all the people from the Value resorts who were upgraded to SSR back in 2007 during Free Dining. I always wonder how many of them bought into DVC.

Cash upgrades will happen more frequently than points upgrades. We had one night in a studio at OKW on cash and a week+ on points in a one bedroom. When we arrived they had upgraded our one night in the studio to a one bedroom and we didn't have to check out or check back in again.

I guess this isn't an upgrade but once we were given a GV at BWV but had booked a GV at OKW. They didn't charge us more points and they gave us free park passes to compensate. We surely didn't need to be compensated because we loved it! It was a boardwalk view!

Ever notice how these kind of threads (that COULD be controvertial) are always started by someone who never returns? I often wonder why these OPs never come back and reply.

I don't understand, why is it controversial to ask this question? It sounds like a legitimate question, I always wondered how that worked when you were there on points as opposed to a cash ressie. The OP probably didn't return because the responses got a a little snarky.:goodvibes

I think that the sensitivity of this topic is due to villa availability and the thought that someone could ask for an upgrade when others could be on wait lists for those room types.

There are always people looking for something free from Disney. Doesn't always happen.
