can you tell me why I NEED to have one? Which brand do you have can you reccomend - do you have a problem with smearing or anything & what do you do about printing photos ('cause I thought I heard you can't use photo paper in them....)

Tell me whatcha know - please...

I'm printing tons pf color graphics/pictures fo thiings on photo paper right now with a HP deskjet....

I only have black and white laser printers. Personally, I don't care for photos printed on color laser printers. I prefer inkjet or an online printer (like Walmart or Adoramapix where they use traditional photo paper and printing) for photos.

If you are printing a "ton" of stuff on your HP, you might consider and online place like Walmart or Adorampix (I like their quaility better than Walmart). It's usually cheaper than doing it yourself but you do have to wait for the prints in the mail from Adorama but you can pick them up at the Walmar one hour photo lab after uploading them to their website.

I have an HP LaserJet Color printer and love it!! For pictures, I use Costco's printing service. You can upload them to their website and pick them up in an hour. I usually just upload them before I go to Costco and by the time I am done shopping, my pictures are done too and I can pick them up on my way out the door! They are very reasonably priced too! :thumbsup2

We have Epson color laserjet, but I do not use it for photos. I either use my HP inkjet, or I go to Walgreens. It is a really great printer, though.

I only have a black & white laser printer. If you have a ton of B&W documents, this is the way to go. It costs so much less per page to print out over an inkjet printer. And the ink cartridges usually last 3000-6000 pages before running out, vs, an inkjet which needs a new cartridge every 200 pages.

As for color laser, I don't know. I don't have one. Each cartridge is way more money that inkjets.

If you need a new printer for pictures, Buy.com has a sale right now:

However: Lexmark printers will NOT accept generic ink cartridges. They often "give away" nearly free printers because they know they will make up the money with their overpriced ink cartridges at $30 each. Another brand will sell you an inkjet printer for $50. You will be able to use generic ink cartridges for about $2-$8 per cartridge. With the Lexmark, in only 2-3 cartridges, you will have paid the same amount as buying another printer and MANY cartridges, able to print out more sheets. :sad2:

We have a HP Color LaserJet 2600n....because DH's work bought it for him for working at home.

We also still have our Canon i9100 inkjet (wide format) connected & I use that for photos & 12x12 scrapbooking.

I was annoyed at first about the laserjet when he came home with it, because I lost alot of desk space...but I honestly use it the most for all general use printing. Having only used laserjet in a work environment due to lots of printing, I didn't see why we needed one.

I still don't think we NEED it....but its' nice to have. But I won't give up my inkjet for photos & scrapbooking.

Bulk photos I have printed elsewhere due to ink expense...but its nice to have a REALLY nice inkjet at home for special projects or the occasional photo.

We have our Black and White Laser...very old...what a work horse. Been around for many years.:thumbsup2

We want a color laser but the price needs to drop a little more for us. We have been watching it for several years now and it is dropping, however it is stuck at the 899.00 mark.

For pictures we go elsewhere.

I've used lasers for about 14 years now. I print an average of 2,000 to 6,000 pages per month, tho, only black & white, so I've never checked in to color options.

The HPs are awesome. Once I strayed and bought a Brother and it crapped out in about six months.

One thing you definitely want to check in to is price of the printer versus price of the toner cartridges. It seems that the cheaper the printer, the more often you'll need to change the toner. I've found, too, that some of the lower-priced printers have very expensive toners to go with them.

Another thing to look at is pages the printer prints per minute. Some folks have a need for very fast printing; others don't mind if it takes a little while. This will all affect price.

You also don't want a printer that you'll have to deal with replacing the drum in addition to the toner.

I ended up with a HP LaserJet 1000 a few years ago, paid $199 for it at Office Depot, get about 6,000 to 8,000 pages out of a toner, and the toners cost around $50 new, $35 remanufactured. I don't need to worry about replacing the drum. It prints at either 14 or 16 ppm.

Update....DH is mumbling...this wasn't in his "plans".:rotfl:

Office Max has a "200.00" off the printer he wants. :lmao: Will Office Max still have it when he goes there? Will he buy it?
So now the printer is 699.00.

HA HA ! so did you get your new printer?

well y'all have actually talked me OUT of wanting a laser - I DON"T do tons in black & white it's the color stuff that I use the most - though I'm not always printing photos - often it's clipart or other graphic images that are in color - but I may print 40 pages a day - have printed as many as 200 pages in a day & will soon be printing that much again (though that's NOT the usual).

So i"m thinking its best for me to stick with what I've got for now - I actually have another printer sitting her beside me not hooked up for when this HP deskjet dies (just in case) the other printer I have is - well what do you know - its ANOTHER HP deskjet - just a different model number LOL _ I didn't buy either of them - my dad gave them to me - when he wants a new one I can usualyl talk him into giving me his "old" one (though this one is less than 1 yr old!)

If you print a lot and want it fast and don't want smudging, then laser printer is the way to go.

If you don't print much, don't care if it can spit out a page a second--and smudging is not a concern for you--then go ink jet.

We have both. I switch back and forth.

For continuity--if you print quite a bit, laser will be more economical in the long run.
