Do resorts change mugs every year?

Taking advantage? c'mon! At 12 bucks a mug- times how many per party, do you know how much soda costs to distribute????? you'd have to refill it like 600 times to break even! And most people don't-

Beverages cost around $1.80-$2.00 so you'd have to refill it around 5 times to break even.

You can buy more than 24 cans of soda at the Hess mini-mart for what the mugs cost. If you're staying at a moderate or deluxe resort you not only get a free refrig but also a free coffee maker. The mugs are rarely a great buy unless you attach some souvenir value to them.

I would think any mugs that were sold without the current length of stay message printed on them would be good for future visits. Whether or not Disney ever intended them to be used again, they should have started including the message on the mugs from the inception of the program if they never wanted any of the mugs to be used for more than one stay

To answer the OP question, I don't know if it's still the case but Boardwalk use to change the mugs at least once a year and had the year and maybe the season on the mug.

I think the concern was DVC guests would be coming back more often than hotel guests and they wanted to limit the re-use of mugs. Bicker is right the DVC resorts used to charge less for the mugs but charged a discounted price for refills.

Disney stopped that as the DVC properties started to be part of resorts (BWV, BCV, VWL) and they wanted a uniform policy.

In all my correspondence, I never asked this specific question as our mugs were purchased in Dec 99 and we were told at the time of purchase that they were good for return visits. I bet tho, that there is not a specific answer, I am thinking that this policy kind of evolved over time. Since it is now on the signage and the mugs the policy is clearly stated.

Yes, I know. The problem is that anyone can say: "Oh, I didn't see the sign". But they cannot dispute the policy if a CM shows them the mug in their hand that bears the same message. That's why I worded my post the way I did.

Good point, especially since there are mug owners out there who bought their mugs with the understanding they could be brought back. Then Disney slightly changes the policy and adds a sign to the soda fountain, but the mugs floating around have different levels of "use-ability" depending on when they were bought. Totally confusing and not well thought out on Disneys part, thus giving us lots of fuel for debate

Total side note, does anyone know when the mug idea was originally introduced and available? 99/00 was our first trip ever.

Just in case anyone was interested: In accordance with §2-309 of the Uniform Commerical Code, any commercial transaction which is indefinite in duration, is only valid for a "reasonable time," and in the absence of any explicit agreement between the parties to the contrary may be terminated at any time by either party. Posting of the fact that refillable mugs are now valid only during the visit they're purchased satisfies the requirement of notification of termination with regard to old refillable mugs.

Ahhh...but here's the problem: the people that don't care -- don't care (no matter what the circumstances are). They will reuse their refillable mugs until you pry them out of their cold, dead fingers!

I usually stay at a different resort each visit so far. But what is the big deal with refillable mugs? If they say lenght of stay on them then thats it! If a CM told you back in 2001 good for future visits then I see no big deal with refilling the mugs on a future trip. I love Disney but it is expensive so if people refill their mugs so what. I have never had the opportunity but I bought 2 mugs from WL in 2002 and they were for future visits so I would reuse unless told otherwise by a CM, if I went back to WL.

I began reading on the Dis Boards about 2 years ago, however, I just began posting recently. The threads here about the refillable mugs have always intruiged me and cracked me up

We have been going to Disney for 10 years and have always stayed at PO. We bought our mugs on our first visit. We have continued taking them back every visit We were told when we purchased them they were good at PO for life! When I started reading on here about how illegal it was to re-use the mugs I felt we were doing something horrible When we arrived that December for Christmas, I asked upon check-in and was told of course you can use your mugs I also asked last year and was told the same. I have also asked in ther food court, the cashiers have seen our mugs on our trays.

This year we will be staying at OKW for the first time, no, we will not use our PO mugs at OKW

I cannot understand why some of you get so upset about this topic. Have any of you who say it is illegal to use the mug on return visits, ever asked a CM yourselves? I would not do something that was considered stealing. I would feel very guilty as well what kind of example would my husband and I be setting for our children? It seems too many people have been told it is ok. Has anyone ever been told not to use a mug and sent to Mickey jail

Apparently your user ID is actual. You appear to be heading a campaign to malign those of us who are doing what we were invited to do. Disney is a happy place, full of people enjoying themselves. Why are you so intent upon making people feel bad. How sad for you.....

I think you've missed the point of most of these discussions, pixie. No one cares about other people refilling old refillable mugs. No one cares about the "stealing." People who care care about only two things:

1) Honesty and integrity, of which there is simply too little of in our society, today; and

2) The adverse impact the abuse of Disney's leniency has on the offerings they provide to all of us.

Anyway, it's a dead issue, isn't it? Page 4, so everything relevant to the thread has probably already been said, and as has already been said, people will do as they will, subject to their own moral judgement.

Many fast food restaurants feature self-service drink dispensors and allow for free refills. It would never occur to me to bring my old cup back to refill.

It really doesn't matter if a guest saw a sign or not.

This topic will never be "DEAD", my point, however, it should be It seems to me that people like yourselves think you are right and everyone else is wrong regardless of what they have been told. If I had ever been told by someone at PO that I needed to purchase a new mug, I would have, as I am sure others would as well. I am honest and moral and my husband and I are raising our daughters with the utmost of integrity. Why do some of you think you have the right to judge others on this? I find it rude and obnoxious

Has anyone ever been told not to use a mug and sent to Mickey jail

I'm wondering the same thing - has anyone ever been confronted or forbidden to fill an older mug????

We (5 of us) have been going to WDW for 20 years. We have stayed at Dixie Landings, Port Orleans and the Carribean resorts. I have purchased mugs at each and have used them concurrently at the respective resorts over the years. I have asked when We checked in, as recent as December 2005 if we have to purchase new mugs. The CM told us it was not necessary, we could use the ones from the previous year, if they were from this resort. We go eat breakfast every morning before we go to the parks and don't return to the resort until late. So we might have 2 drinks per day. I really don't sit and think how much we have to drink to re-coop our $12.00 investment. We spend at least $25.00 a day on drinks in the parks, if not more. I don't think WDW is worried about making money off us, on fountain drinks. If you feel like you are CHEATING the MOUSE BIG SPENDER, buy a new mug everytime you go!! Have at it!!! But as long as they tell me it's ok, I'm going to continue using our mugs. All the restaurants in WDW give free refills anyway?? Besides, most us that have gone so many times we have spent enough to pay for a lifetime refills. PS: I'll be thinking of all of you this summer when I'm sipping on my FREE COLD REFILL!!!!!!

The truth is the present policy is basically free soda. Old mugs, mugs from the wrong resort, paper cups, Big Gulp mugs and even bread bags have been used without CM complaints. Most of the resorts have at least had signs limiting your refills to your present stay. I've seen those signs back in the mid 90's. Once the guest and CM has made the decision to take/offer free soda I don't really see if it matters if the free soda goes in an old mug from Disney or a mug from somewhere else.

pixiedust4five There have been a couple of posts from guests at the POLY who were giving a hard time by CMs and I don't think there is any self-service dispensers by the Boardwalk. At one time the Boardwalk Bakery had a sign that said something like free refills for all current Boardwalk mugs (they had a year and I think season on them). The sign went on to offer refills at a discount (around $1) for all other mugs.

We first encountered the mugs on a trip back in 1994. We stayed at CBR and the mugs were right in our room. I think they were around $8 if we decided we wanted to start using them. I can't remember what they said then about future visits though.

Many of the posts regarding this issue have referred to McDonald's and BK who have selfserve dispensers. I'm sure the responses were made with "tongue in cheek." If you want to get literal, the paper cups at such places are in the $1.00-$2.00 range, not $12.00 and indestructable as the mugs in question are. I think people who are comparing the issue are doing so just to have something to post. It's not comparable, at all. I suppose if you'd like to keep a flimsy, stained paper cup and use it upon a return visit, it would be your choice. Enjoy!
