Do People with a CHL have a KTN?

Does somebody with a CHL automatically get a KTN for Pre-Check? My FIL told us this morning that it shows Pre-Check on all of his boarding passes. (he showed us one as proof) He claims he has never been fingerprinted for it and the only time he gave his fingerprints was when he got his CHL, 2 years ago.

No. CHL's are state-specific programs and every one has different requirements. Precheck is a federal program with its own strict requirements.

No. CHL's are state-specific programs and every one has different requirements. Precheck is a federal program with its own strict requirements.

That is the thought my husband and I had as well. We were just trying to figure out how it came about and this was one thing we considered.

Law abiding citizens don't carry on the plane. You only have to worry about criminals.

DH had a CC permit in NY (yes, it's rare but does happen) ... he never gets a pre-check.

Law abiding citizens do take their firearms on planes. Not in a carry-on unless they have some special clearance. Usually an Air Marshall, FBI, CIA, etc.
Some shoot for sport, others go on hunting trips, some do shooting competitions and others simply for getting together with buddies for guy/girl time and perhaps going to the range. Those people check their guns in and it is completely legal.

KTN = Known Traveler Number. It is an identification number a person is issued when they are approved for one of several US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) or TSA frequent traveler programs: e.g. Global Entry, Sentri, NEXUS, TSA's PreCheck. It is used when traveling by air to let the airline and TSA know and verify you are part of those programs. Among other benefits, being a member of those programs and having a KTN makes one eligible to be chosen for TSA PreCheck (if traveling at a participating airport on a participating airline) BUT it is not a guarantee of being chosen. For the CBP programs there are also other customs-related and crossing-borders benefits which vary depending on which program one is a member of.

Concealed Handgun License (CHL) holders are not allowed to have a gun in their carry-on or on their person on an airplane (IIRC doing so is a felony). Guns go in checked baggage (and there are rules to follow) except for exceptional circumstances -- some pilots are allowed to be armed (requires special training + there are rules); law enforcement escorting a prisoner (again, there are rules); and certain other special circumstances (there are specific rules and processes that have to be followed). A "normal" citizen following the law will not be carrying a gun on the plane.
