The reason I ask is that my friend is dating someone who claims to be living there. But yet she did not see his apartment, that particular weekend he upgraded to a primiere suite (looked up on internet 1900.00 a night) while she was there. And the story goes that on Sunday (the day my friend left, he will go back to the other). Where I am from, I do not know anyone who LIVES in a hotel, especially one so expensive. I am a bit weery of him and not sure he is all he says he is. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, people sometimes do live in hotels if they can't find a decent apartment or if they are "in-between" apartments, however, moving from one room to the next sounds fishy.

the message my friend conveyed is that he lived there. he was not in transition, he was not there just for a bit. this is the place that he called home. i asked a few times, because i am not aware of this concept.

My dad travels a lot fpr business and often "lives" in semi-nice hotels for extended periods of time. I have heard of other people doing so when their job requires it.

However, my gut instinct would be that this guy is probably married and does not want your friend going to his real home, where his wife and kids are. Maybe I'm just cynical.

I suppose it's possible that he lives there in the hotel, but who knows. Maybe he really lives at home with his mother and doesn't want your friend to know it?

I dunno. Sounds fishy. Most people who temporarily live in hotels, don't live in fancy hotels.

Tell your friend to call the hotel and say that she'd like to leave a voicemail for him. They can only put the call through if they have him as registered. She doesn't have to leave a message if she doesn't want to ........... but that way she'll know if he's a guest there or not.

Oh yes. They have residential apartments in Caryale, Trump hotel and Ritz for sure. You don't rent by the night (you could, but those are regular hotel rooms for short-term lease, and not residential units). You buy the unit. A 1-bdroom unit will probably go for 1.5 million or so. They have maid service, food service and all the hotel amenities.

Your friend is dating a very rich guy.

If you were so rich, that you could live at the carlyle... would you ride a bus everytime you went to visit? It is over a 7 hour bus ride from nyc to where my friend lives. It is only an hour and half flight, or a six hour train ride, or drive yourself? But yet he consistantly takes the bus. Who takes the Greyhound voluntarily???

The other strange part is when my husband and I ask what he does he has said things before like, real estate, 'vulture capitalist', apartments, stocks. But it has never been the same answer.

I'd be very suspicious. Yeah, only the Hilton sisters type can afford these apartments, and they don't take buses. Not only the units are expensive, they are not available to regular folks to buy.

Maybe ask him details questions about the hotels, like the concierge's name, and see if it's consistent.

Venture capitalist is a real job. They invest with their own (or other people's) money into deals (ventures) that they think may be successful.

Yes, people do live in NYC hotels all the time. Some are business people there for extended stays and sometimes they just live there. Gen. McArthur's widow lived in the Waldorf-Astoria for years. However, it would be very expensive. The Carlyle is among the hotels where people could have a permanent residence.

My other thought was that he worked for the hotel. The GM and possibly other positions would also have apartments in the hotel. However, it sounds like this isn't the case.

The idea of calling the hotel and asking for him is a good start to check on whether he is legit.

It's possible that he doesn't drive -- many people who live in NYC never learn to drive (Barbara Walters for example). And, he could have a fear of flying. However, I don't think Greyhound would be the way he'd come to visit -- car service or train would be more like it.

The website for the hotel is www.thecarlyle.com

I found this blurb, so they do have residential apartments.

ROOMS
The hotel is made up of 180 accommodations (128 rooms, 56 suites), plus 60 residential apartments. Each room is characteristically unique, with such color schemes as Chinese red, burnt orange and celadon. The walls are decorated with Audubon prints, architectural renderings by Piranesi or the English country scenes by Kips.

Your friend should find out as much as possible about him. However, one thing about people who sometimes say they are venture capitalists is that they put on a "show" for business. It's possible he takes his apartment expense out of the business but, in reality, doesn't have a lot of cash.

he called himself a VULTURE capitalist. my husband explained that one who does that exploits going out business to make money out of them. he also said, even if that is what you do, you dont usually call yourself that.

i did not think about working in the hotel. that could be possible, or living there and writing it off as a business expense, good idea too.

i still dont understand the greyhound thing. there is an express train that is much faster and nicer than the bus anyday. he may not have a license, but can drive as I have seen him drive my friends car before.

i just want the best for her and there seem to be too many question marks.

How/where did she meet him? I agree that I'd be pretty cautious with this one.

SO funny that you asked this...I was reading a Danielle Steel today (I've started on her and Nora Roberts for some fun reading while I'm taking the summer off) and it was talking about that...Not something I would have thought of, that's for sure!

She met him through a parents without partners group. He joined late last summer as we was then moving his mother and son here from nyc. He said that there were no good schools in the city and wanted to take his son out for one year to improve and get ready for prep school. He bought a house for his mom (I guess she wanted to get out too) and enrolled his son in private school (a son that I have never actually seen). Teh son stayed with the mom.

So they started dating on ther own without the parent group. He took about four month off from work to get his mom and son adjusted(july-october). He then would come to the area every 1-2 weeks and then spend 3-7 days.

Around Christmas, my husband and I planned a trip to nyc and my friend came too. We met up with him and he 'showed us the sights' (another story for another day). I have been to nyc a few times but the other two had not. I could have sworn at the time he said he lived in queens (over the bridge, and I had a friend who lived in queens, so i could relate. I asked my friend about this and she said, 'well, maybe he once lived in queens. i am sure you are mistaken'). And if he lived in the Carlyle (which at one point we were only a few blocks from ) why did he not show it to us? Afterall, we were staying in the Red Roof by Penn Station???!!

In the past few months, he has been here much more than he has been there. According to her, he does work out of his mother's house on a laptop. If he is, what he once says he was (into apartment business) wouldnt he have to be there more?

This distresses me so, as it sounds like a Lifetime movie unfortunately.:( .

Maybe there is a condo or apartment building out there named Caryle too? But then why so sneaky? Does she only have his cell number, and not home number?

Ask him for his address, say you need to send him a XMas card soon.

This guy sounds like BAD NEWS. Your friend needs to run fast and far.

There are just way too many red flags from what you have written here. Especially if she has a child.

now where is the mother of the son, does your friend have an address and a phone number for him. It does sound fishy....
