do people actually use the umbrella spotters and wave phone holders?

I am seeing some cute stuff on etsy, do people use them?

As far as the wave phone holders maybe, depends on your family preference, my DH and I only carried the wave phones when our DS was in the kids club. Other than that we just texted each other when needed. Disney's app now has a texting feature making staying in touch with fellow cruisers a lot easier.

the app and the texting feature likely means the wave phones' days are numbered

wave phones will have to stay until the nursery and kids clubs can be switched to contacting parents through the phone apps.

should be fairly easy. When you register your kids you include your phone info. Gotta think DCL would like to shed the costs of maintaining/replacing/supporting the wave phones. Some can say not everyone uses smartphones, etc...but by the same token, you can't be forced to carry a wave phone around all the time either.

So someone has to go out and get a smart phone just so the nursery/kid's club can contact them on a cruise? Not everyone lives with a phone in hand day in and day out. Some people just want to get away during a vacation.

As a compromise, how about just having a pager system onboard? Oh, wait, the Wave phone does that.

I haven't been on a cruise yet but fail to see the big difference between carrying a smart phone or carrying the wave phone - apart from the fact most people already have at least one smart phone in their family.

Wave phones don't have games, or web browsing, etc. We still prefer the wave phone as the app would take hours or if you weren't logged in you wouldn't get the message.

i put my phone in the safe once we board and dont take it out until the morning we leave, so we do use the wave phones for nursery communication.

We use the umbrella finder on CC to help the kids find us. My wife and I spend very little time in the water but kids love Pelican Plunge. They both wear glasses but can't wear them in the water so it helps them find us easier.

I can't stand trying to text on the wave phones and we all use our iPhones to take pics so we will be trying out the texting app in less than 2 weeks.

Just letting you know if you cruise a lot or your kids go to water parks a lot I found a google place online that sells prescription googles for 25 bucks. I've taken mine all over DCL and the Disney hotel slides and never have been told to take them off. For so cheap it may make the time between glasses and beach play easier on your kids.

I wonder if they will go more the way of RCCL where you can check out the wave phone at Customer Service or in the nursery if you want it. But we too put our phones in the safe and don't see them again til the cruise is over. We use the wave phones with our daughter.

I use the WAVE phone....I tune out everything outside of that ship other than my port adventures! It's vacation! I use my Navigator and honestly if it's an emergency someone has to get a hold of me they will call me on the ship.

The reason I cruise is so I can't be contacted...is that mean?

When I cruise on RCCL, my (smart)phone goes in the safe until we are back at the original port the last morning. On DCL, I'll carry my (smart)phone solely for the Navigator app and for nothing else. I don't want to be contacted by the "outside world" either during any cruise on any line. I understand that there are still some people out there that do not have smartphones. However, didn't stop Disney from instituting a system at WDW that relies heavily on them. I can certainly see them doing something similar on DCL. Why continue to carry the costs of the wave phones?
