Was wondering if this is something other parents think about too or if it's just me. We are giving DS10.5 checking in/out of the Oceaneer Lab priviledges (not sure if we have a choice) but there will be no KTTW priviledges on that card. Not that DS will abuse the charging priviledges but he may loose the card.

go with what u r comfortable with no one knows your child better than u , we just had a 10 year old niece with us , and we did not give her charging priv. as a matter of fact we did not even give her a key to room she did not need one as she was with us
this was at wdw on labor day weekend but same thing

We gave both to our son. All he bought was 2 sodas and 2 game cards the entire week. He was so good with it that I gave him charge privileges at WDW also. It was great to send him off to get sodas or ice cream while I held our parade spot for a change!

We just got back and we did give our daughter (who will be 10 in 3 weeks) sign in/out priviledges and charge priviledges. It worked out fabulously and she has now proven her responsibility and maturity. I also think the taste of independence was a real highlight of the cruise for her.

We did agree to the following rules ahead of time and she stuck to them:
1)You must sign out with a friend.....never by yourself
2)You must have a destination in mind.....no signing out to wander around the ship aimlessly
3)You must have the lab page us with your destination..."Amanda and friend signed out to go to the movies", "Amanda has signed back into the club"

Anyway, it was the perfect way to handle it for our family, she loved it and we always knew where she was.

In regard to charging....she had full priviledges and we discussed what an awesome responsibility this was. The whole time she did not lose her card and all that she charged was 1 arcade card, 1 pkg of m&ms, and 1 sprite. Not bad, huh!

Depends on your child. We gave DS8 and DS10 sign in/out privileges and charging - with a budget! They knew that anything over a certain amount would come out of their allowance. They did beautifully! When checking out, they used the 2-way radios to let us know that they were leaving and where they were going. We watched them mature alot over the course of 7 days. They got to test their independence and we got to watch them practice 'responsibility'. It was a great experience for us all. (Of course, a DISNEY ship is the only place I would allow my children such freedom. I knew they would be safe.)

That said, you know your child, you know YOU and what will work for your family. Trust your judgment and have a GREAT time!

my son would spend a fortune at the arcade, so i went ahead and had his charging privileges removed. If it weren't for that one thing, i probably would have let him have charging privileges.

I wish that I had this same type of security. I just don't feel that safe with letting my 11 year old wander around a ship. I may feel differently once we are on board, but I really can not imagine that I will.

My daughter is extremely mature and responsible for her age, but it is other people that I am worried about.

After all, someone was just arrested on the Magic with cocaine. And we have read many stories of shipboard happenings. (Not specifically Disney)

I am interested to see what I decide once on board.

As far as spending privilages. I would have no problem with this as my DD is very responsible and would stay within the parameters that we set for her.

I let my DS9 have both charging and signing in/out privliges and he did great. He charged 1 arcade card and a souvenier at the ESPN store, that we had previously discussed him getting. We also had a set time that he would be leaving the lab and he was only allowed to come back to the cabin. Once he called to ask if he could stay another 30 minutes but usually he showed up a couple of minutes after our predetermined time. He also usually finished dinner before me and would want to join his group in another part of the ship. This was the first place I let him have a little independence and I would not have done this at WDW. These were the days when your card had the sticker for soda on it and he never lost it and could get his own drinks without me leaving what I was doing or run back to the room to get something I forgot. It was a good way to loosen the "apron strings" a little bit.

Parents know their children best, and each child is different. :)

My 9-year-old will not get signing out privileges in December nor will she need charging privileges. She doesn't drink soda and she has no need to charge anything else.

I think the two-way radios are a great idea for families that want to allow their kids the sign-out privileges. :)

Regarding the KTTW cards..... my twin 6yos will not have any privilges (Heck, they are only 6!). As to my 13yo DD, I haven't decided yet. Is there a way to put a cap on the spending for individual cards? I would try a limit of $50, and see how she does with it. Reasonable expenditures I don't have a problem with.... but for big ones I need to be in the loop.

If I can't put a cap on it, I have to do some thinking. With a cap, it's an easy choice.

I just had an idea. Since DS is paying off his KTTW card with his disney dollars I'll just remind him if it's lost, it's his money. He may decide then not to have any charging on it.

I am with Michelle on this one. My DD who will be 8 1/2 on our trip will not have sign out privileges. I don't let her go next door by herself, so she is not going to walk around a ship. I might feel differently if she had an older sibling or a friend, but not alone. As for charging, we do not drink soda either so she would have no reason to charge.
