Hey Anne,
I don't know if you're allowed to answer this so if I don't get a response I'll know why, but what does it take for someone to get banned? Like what is the unpardonable sin? On another board I am on constantly 2 have just been banned and when they got new screen names they were banned again. I didn't see any cuss words...so what does it take?
I can't speak for all boards, just the two that I moderate. (I also moderate a couple yahoo groups, but they are private or semi-private, so moderation is more "maintenance" helping people rejoin if they've got a new email address and things along those lines.)
Back to the ones I actually have to "moderate."
On the one, I've never had to ban anyone. It's been a relatively slow board, most everyone who posts knows each other from other boards, and everyone gets along. We get trolls here and there, but they tend to do driveby's, and we never see them again. I delete the posts and it's all over.
On the other, I swear I've gotten to hate full moons. We've got people from all over the world, and for the most part it's a lot of regulars. But some of them are there to do nothing but stir the pot. The rule of thumb is that they can disagree, but must be respectful.
We allow "potty language" but the "seven words you can't say on TV" are filtered. I've also got filters on some words that aren't curses but are sexual in nature, in more than a few languages. One which describes a rather deviate sexual act in Japanese appears as "Disney World" to anyone who posts it.
I've never banned anyone for language, I just put a new filter in, and have fun with it. I use ridiculous words instead of *****, I humour myself, what can I say?
We have two types of "bans." One is a "suspension." That happens when I think someone needs a break to get themselves together. It's usually someone who's been around for awhile and is generally well behaved, but just has a bug up their tush about something. I change their password but don't lock or delete their account. So they don't lose post counts, etc., and the other posters don't realize they are suspended so it gives them a bit of dignity. I e-mail them and tell them I'm going to give them a cooling off period, and tell them when they think they are ready to come back and be more in control, they can e-mail me. (We have a lot of teens, and sometimes they just need a timeout.) I reset their password to "behave" and give them the new password. They can change it, although I don't think all do.
The other is an outright ban. I can either delete the user name, or just lock it.
Why do I ban... It can be a lot of reasons. Repeated copyright violations are a huge no-no. Discussion of piracy is OK, giving links to where to d/l copyrighted material is not. Being outrageously disrespectful to others after a couple warnings. Posting SPAM. There's no set in stone criteria, and sometimes I'll ask the opinion of the admins from a couple other similar boards who are friends if I'm on the fence. We also share IP addresses of known trolls.
Because of our global audience, I have to be careful that there's not a language barrier--that actually happened a couple weeks ago, and it's all good now.
So in my case there is no list of reasons for banning, other than of course someone who comes on, first post starts insulting people, that type of thing. It's very subjective, although I try to be as fair and impartial as I can. Hope that helps.
Anne
