Does anyone know if Nextel phones will work while on board? We want to bring along some sort of two-way communication device to keep track of our party. We all have NEXTELS and were thinking on brining those along instead of our 'walkie talkies'.

Thanks for the Information. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Once you're out of range of cell service, nope. Rely on the 2 ways first.

I hear that because of the steel on the ship, the two-ways don't really work...did you have good luck with them?

we have nextels and it did not work....not even in st. thomas because that island does not service nextel.

Exactly, the beep beep thing relys on cell service entirely to work. Once you are out of sight of the contintental us(including Key West) they won't work anymore.

As far as the usability of the 2-way radio devices, the 2 mile ones are limited as said by the fact the ship is metal. The higher range ones will cover.

Two things to think about tho. One, there are ship phones everywhere, so arranged checkins are a breeze. Two, if you are checking a kid into the kids club, you get a pager good for coverage on the whole ship. There the radio s actually worse.

When I was out on the Eastern...I couldnt even get the nextel phone or beep to work ANYWHERE.....only time was when we got very close to Florida. It was awful. My brother had Verizon and he got service in port and around the Castaway Cay mark...maybe a bit closer to Florida.

We had Nextels which worked GREAT at the parks, and only used our Nextels at the port. Turned them off for the duration of the cruise. We did bring 5 mile Motorola Talkabouts but did not have much reason to use them on the ship. There isn't enough room to get all that separated, and you always have time to swing back by the room to pick up a message.

Our's did not work. The 2-way walkie talkies were the way to go

The Nextels stopped working about 3 hours after we started to sail and about three hours before being back to port on both our Western this year and Eastern last. They worked this year on Thanksgiving night after dinner (on the Western) for about an hour as we passed what I believe was a bahamian island....

Our Nextel phones didn't work at all on our December 11 Eastern Cruise. The only connection we had was when we were at port in Cape Canaveral. We tried them every where!

Nextels are cell phones so they won't work. I took our Walkie Talkies to Disneyland, and after trying to use them once, left them in the hotel room. Might be better on the ship since there are only 2,000 folks there, instead of 60,000 in Disneyland. Let's just say all I heard on every channel was "mom, dad, billy, where are you" .

Cingular works great in St Thomas. We sat on the 8th deck and called all our friends back in OK where it was snowing. Made their day .... not! :cool1:
