Do many members just take a loss on their holding points?

Sorry I can not get the quote button to work:
lovin'fl "You can't transfer holding points."

What can be done is the person with the holding points can have transfered to them the additional points and then make the reservation using those holding and transfered points, for the person who transfered the points to them. I have done this, so I know it works .
Had someone who had some free holding points, but not enough to book a nights stay. I transfered to them enough additional points to book the night and they did so in my name.

Ahhh...good idea...hadn't thought of that.

On this subject - and this is a bit complicated:

I just booked at the Poly for 4 nights as the second half of a split stay, canceling a BLT lake view reservation. If I hadn't manipulated my points properly

What should have happened:
Booked 6 nights at BCV on 1/28 for 8/28 - 9/3 - used 2014 UY points and borrowed 2015 UY points.
Booked 4 nights at BLT on 2/3 for 9/3 - 9/7 - using borrowed 2015 points.
Switch to 4 nights at Poly on 2/25, freeing up 2 borrowed 2015 points. These points would've been "lost".

What I did instead:
Booked 7 nights at BCV on 1/27 for 8/27 - 9/3 - used remaining 2014 UY points and borrowed 2015 UY points.
Cancel first night at BCV on 1/29, freeing up sixteen 2014 UY points.
Booked 4 nights at BLT on 2/3 for 9/3 - 9/7 - using sixteen 2014 UY points and borrowed 2015 points.
Switch to 4 nights at Poly on 2/25, freeing up 2 2014 UY points. These points now can be banked.

Not really the same situation as the OP, but a case where I had to work around the system to ensure I didn't lose 2 points. Can't imagine people just letting large #s of points expire. I'd friggin' GIVE them away before I just wasted them.

My guess is that there are hundreds of thousands of points forfeited each year due to various reasons.

We have met several families who don't use their points each year, don't bank and just lets them expire.

:earsboy: Bill

Amazing isn't it. Some folks can't be bothered to rent them or give them to someone else. Just ask me, I'd take them. :worship:

I've got 3 holding points that will expire on September 30.

Started to borrow to book Poly in May. Stopped myself...just back from 2 weeks vacation.

And, still thinking I should go again! I'm booked for November already.

Do I really need a trip in May? Just to go stay at the Poly and go to Flower and Garden and then there is also Star Wars weekends?

I've got points, I've got tickets, I've got gift cards. Gas is cheap now. I've got free hotel nights if I drive from Maryland.

Nothing to stop me........

See all the potential trouble those three little holding points are causing me??

Cause the trip always costs more then I intend it to...

I say book it!!! I was thinking of switching my holding points HHI resie over to the Poly but could only get 1-2 nights and it's already tough to drive (also from MD) to HHI for 2 nights let alone all the way to Disney. But if I could make it work for 4-5 nights, I so would...or if I could get cheap-ish airfare (checked and no-go). Would love to try flower and garden.

I have 31 points in holding from our decision to return home early from our January trip. I'm feeling fairly confident that I'll be able to burn most of these, if not all, by booking 1-2 nights at the Grand California sometime between now and 9/30. {{ fingers crossed! }}
My holding points have been spent! Flower and Garden Festival, here we come! Poly, here we come! :D

OMG! What dates did you book? I was down for F&G a few years back and we had perfect weather in the low 80ties with little rain. It was mid May.

See, driving is nothing for me. I leave my house at various times - early if I haven't worked that day, after working half a day, the whole day, whichever and I just love it once I'm south of Fredericksburg on 95. I just glide along.

What I do avoid now - travelling at Easter or Xmas or July-August. Too much traffic during the holidays!

I stop in Rocky Mount or Florence if I've left late. I stop in HH, Savannah or Jacksonville if I've left at 4am. I collect hotel points for Country Inn and Suites, Holiday Inn Express, and Sheraton (Jacksonville Aloft at Deer Park I think was just 3000 for a Friday night and it was adequate for the 8-10 hrs I spent there.) Don't stay at the airport location - noisy and lumpy beds, but it did have a nice staff.

Country Inns - if you have 5000 pts, you can get a room with points and cash for $50-65. Always clean, fairly decent breakfast and if you leave early, they have granola bars, fruit, cookies, coffee and tea as early as 4am. Then the regular breakfast with make your own waffles and a few hot items at 6 or 6:30 or 7 depending on the hotel or day.

HI Express - never cheap anymore but usually dependable quality.

I love Hampton Inn, but those few hours are just not worth a $50-$75 difference in price.

I rarely drive all the way because I won't sleep with someone else driving and then I need a day's sleep when I get there, so I've saved no time and the room is way more expensive.

I lost 1 holding point a couple of years ago.

Judique- That sounds like how we do it. We have stopped at a HI express in Santee a few times. We also like to stop around Savannah. The best was Daytona Beach area when we went to Disney's Vero Beach in 2012....loved Daytona. We now have a condo in Durham, NC and I thought we could stop there but it isn't directly on the path. And it still leaves about 9 hours of driving on day 2. We are driving down in August....actually the DH and DS (and DS's GF) are leaving from MD but Me and my DDs will be in Chattanooga, TN for softball and will drive down from there...8.5 hours. I like the Country Inn too...haven't been earning points (didn't sign up, didn't know) and probably should have. Bummer.

We'll be there in April -- not quite 'Opening' -- but at least in the resort's first few weeks of operation! (We hit Aulani for its 'Official Grand Opening' and that was spectacular.) This will be my first, true, F&G Festival. I sorta got a glimpse last year when at WDW for RunDisney's Everest Expedition event -- however, I was touring my entire family through every single park. Most of my group were WDW-first-timers and stopping to take in F&G wasn't in the cards.

The best part of this trip is that it is trip #4 on our DVC-PAPs! LOL -- an unexpected "freebie," of sorts.

A 'free' trip! The best kind, even though we know we'll spend money!

We used One Time Use Points (OTUP) to add on a night combined with the small number of leftover holding points. It added a day to our vacation. :thumbsup2

I have 2 holding points in my June UY and will lose them (had VWL booked for F&W for 3 nights when, at last minute, BCV opened up for 2 of the nights and was 1 point less per night...so I don't mind losing them, was worth it). I had enough trouble using my 42 holding points (from canceling 1 night of our Aug trip last summer) in my Aug UY (booked 2 nights at HHI in April and it will be a pain to travel there for just 2 nights but I will do it). Been DVC members since 2006 and this was the only 2 times we changed our resies w/in the 30 day window...don't foresee doing it in the future.

Quoting myself because I just used the 2 holding points that I thought I'd lose. Added 1 night for 14 points to our upcoming HHI trip. Paid for 12 OTU points....eeek, but we now have 3 nights over Easter.

I don't understand the 60 day thing and what is holding
Points is that like banked points?

Holding points are points from a reservation that was canceled within the last 30 days of a reservation. They can only be used to book a new reservation within 60 days of arrival.
