Has anyone travelled out of Pearson International recently? Did they request picture I.D. for kids? My daughter and I are taking Air Transat on Jan. 2nd. She is on my passport and I will take her birth certificate, but I don't have picture I.D for her. Where would you get picture I.D. for a child anyway??

My wife and my 3 children just returned from Disney. We brought the birth certificates and had no problems.

Hi to a fellow Hamiltonian!

And a big welcome to the DIS koppeserj! I think you're going to like this place as the folks here are fantastic!!!;) There are 3 (now 4 of us) from Hamilton that hang around these boards!Hope you drop in soon!:)

Just want to say hello to koppeserj from another one of the Hamiltonians that sammi mentioned:wave:

Most of the airlines don't require any i.d. for children under 18. We just traveled with 5 children to Disney from 2 different airports. I don't think photo i.d.'s are available for kids.

Hi fellow traveller!
It sounds like you're on the same flight as my family (the unbelievably early morning one?) We only have birth certificates for the kids but our TA checked on this at our request (more than once) and we were told this was fine. Have a fabulous trip!

Hi everyone, newbie here. Just one note to add...I always travel alone with my son and while he doesn't need picture id I did need a letter notorized (ours was from a lawyer) stating my husband had given me "permission" to take our son out of the country. Sometimes I've been asked and sometimes I've been not. As a travel agent we always advised clients of these letters and the airlines right to request them. Apparently they can deny boarding. I guess this would be even more important in a separated family situation. I personally have been asked to show this at both the airport and once at the boarder when we drove down. No longer in the travel industry but I understand the rules to be the same.

Just wanted to say "hi" to TMLI and give you a great big welcome to the DIS. All it takes is a few posts and you won't feel like a newbie any more, especially here on the Canadian board where there aren't too many of us. We're glad you've joined us!

Hi msmere - Yes, I believe we're on the same flight........6:45 a.m on Jan. 2nd? Oh, well at least we'll be in Orlando very early!

Thanks to everyone for their responses. I have travelled alone with my daughter by air 3 times and I haven't been asked for anything (she is now 9 yrs. old). The last time we flew (2 years ago) I took a letter signed from her father (we are separated) stating he was aware of our travel plans.........I wasn't asked for it but presented it to U.S customs at Pearson just in case. I have never been asked travelling by car. This time I am taking a letter again and a copy of our separation agreement (I have sole custody) just to be on the safe side! I phoned U.S. customs 2 weeks ago and the man I spoke to said a letter isn't necessary but it is a good idea. He said it doesn't have to be notarized. Hope this helps anyone who had similar questions.

We flew to Orlando and we obtained photo identification for the kids at the Motor Vehicle Branch. Looks much like a drivers license except they place the childs photo right onto it. Here in New Brunswick (Maritimes) it only cost $9.00 for each one and they do it up right there. The airlines did ask for I.D. for the kids and we were asked for it on our way home at the airport (U.S.). Hope this helps. And we took their birth certificates along with us as secondary proof of citizenship.

We actually just got passports for the whole family. New passport regualtions are that
children can no longer be added to their parents passports. The fees have increased as well.
It costs $85 adults, $35 3-16, under 3 $20. We decided for our Disney Cruise we needed the
security of all of us having our own passports, so were we ever glad when we got to the passport office that we had our Daughters (currently 35 months--just in the nick of time to
save $15) filled out. We knew nothing about this new regulation until we arrived at the
passport office. Apparently in to effect Dec 11??

Thanks to everyone for their help. I went to our local Driver's & Vehicles centre and they said they have never done picture I.D. for children! Maybe it's only in certain provinces. I just got my passport in December (picked it up on Dec. 19, dropped off application Dec. 5) and had my daughter added to mine - they mentioned nothing about the new regulations! Oh well, it seems like birth certificates have been okay, and that's all I have used previously for her..........so here's hoping!

If you applied for a passport before Dec 11, adding a child's name to a parent's passport would still be OK even if the passport was completed after Dec 11.

Note the Canadian Passport office is supporting an ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) proposal to require all people to have individual passports for international flights.

Hi there
we were there is december, the kids just had their birth certificates...they were more concerned about the adults...we got hassled at Mpls airport because I did not have my passport or birth certificate (I had forgotten them at home on the kitchen table..what a way to start the trip!!) It was the customs that we had difficulty with....anyway, we had a great time but will be more careful next time
