I DON"T THINK SO!!
I was hired as a cashier. Only problem is I will have no life (or family) if I accept. :( I have 3 kids in school and refuse to just never see then again! I was told that they NEVER hire for morning shifts. You have to be available 7am - 11pm, 7 days/week. She said most shifts would be 1pm - 10pm or 2pm - 11pm. This would include every Saturday and Sunday too. And I would see my kids when? All this for a barely over minimum wage job? I need the Christmas money, but my kids need a mom too! At least sometimes!!
I DON"T THINK SO!! Bummer is now I have to find something else. :(

What??? So WHO works morning shifts if they don't hire for them?

I also got a job as a cashier at Wla-mart. i have since quit, because I took a job delivering pizza, and with my arthritis, moving around delivering pizza is less physically demanding on me than standing in one place for hours at a time as a cashier.

Anyway, my point is, I took the job on a part time basis. I cannot work nights during the week, because DH works nights. I was hired based on my availabilty, 10am-2pm.
I was never told I had to be available from open to close hours.

Maybe they don't have any availability for morning hours right now, but to say they NEVER hire for those hours makes no snese. Someone is working them!

Good luck on finding another job. If you have a Dominos in your area, maybe you can deliver for them? I work about 10-12 hours a week and so far I gross about $130 a week. (that's JUST my tips, i also get a regular paycheck every two weeks, I just started so I have not gotten my 1st paycheck yet to see what that brings in)

Reminds me the most recent south park episode about "wall-mart".

Check it out when you get a chance...real funny stuff :)

koombah yah my lord, koombah yah :)

That's what I said too. I was told only "seniority" gets morning shift! :snooty: O well, I thought I was being pretty flexible. Anything between 6am and 5pm. Guess that's not good enough.

Thats what I was going to answer. It really depends on the store and how much they are willing to work with you and what departments they need help in. Do you have a Toys R Us around you? Those are fun to work at around the holidays. Very busy, you will never get bored. Not sure how flexible they are though. When I worked for them I was young, single and no children so my availability was open.

I was a cashier at Wal-mart for several years before we got stationed up here and I had to work the 2-11pm shift or the 3-12 shift. I never could get any morning hours because the people that had worked there longer than I had been alive had first pick. I hated working night shift and I am glad that I had to quit when we moved. Now I am a SAHM and DH and I both agreed that I should stay at home with the girls until Holly is in school. I missed so much of Remy growing up that it is really nice to not have to make the same sacrifices with Holly.

As already said, that's the way it goes with retail. Senority gets the better shifts and it isn't just Wal-Mart. I worked for Blockbuster for 4 years and NEVER got morning shift....even as a manager. At least my mom was lucky enough to get morning shift at Wal-Mart now that she is a dept manager.

Yeah, don't work for Wal-Mart if you need morning hours.

DH just had his 4 year anniversary on the 4th, and his hours are all over the map. No weekends off ever, never knows when his days off are going to be, and they routinely work him 2-11pm, then the next day 8am-5pm.

I think they just blindly put people on the schedule, like pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey.

Morons:mad:
Maybe if they could work out better shifts and allow people to still have a LIFE they wouldn't always be so short-handed.

With many of the retail stores going 24/7, it's not a world of work-life balance anymore.
I guess it depends on your financial need and if you could just do it for a certain time frame.
Would hate to see you turn it down if it was for the paycheck--who knows, once you get in and do a good job, they may pick you for an internal opening with more stable hours on a better shift. I think companies are always looking for good people--you just have to prove it to them.
If you want more normal hours, stick with retails that close by 9pm or so.

Good Luck in your decision.

hehehehehehehehehe...I was hoping someone else saw that....
That was great. ::yes::
It was last weeks new episode.

I love to shop at walmart, but I have heard many horror stories from the Employees. I am sure that I am glad I don't work there (it was a thought awhile back)

I applied like 3-4 years ago to work evenings and weekends, I was turned down because I couldn't work mornings. Then I heard a manager say they couldn't find anyone to work weekends. When I told him I applied for weekends mainly and turned me down he was surprised and asked me to apply again. I didn't because at that point I didn't want to work for them.
But in retail you will always get the crappy hours first and then work your way up if you do your job right and the company appreciates it.

That's retail for you. New employees always get the worst hours. worked in retail for a long time. The longest I did was 4.5 years at an educational toy store. It took about a year before I got the hours I wanted.

The worst was when I worked for The Disney Store years ago. They actually made me come in to do inventory until 2 in the morning one night, even though I'd requested the day off because I had a college final the next day.

I quit on the spot (and yes, I got an A on my final! I probably would have failed if I was there till 2 am plus my 30 minute commute). Unfortunately, my chances of working for Disney again are probably trashed because of that one horrible experience.

I've heard mixed reviews of working at Wal Mart. I know some people who love it, and some people who only lasted a few months. I like shopping there, for the most part, but only really early in the day or late at night (we have a 24 hour one near me) because it is way too crowded and I'm not going to stop shopping there.

I hope you find something that better suits your needs. Sorry Wal Mart didn't work out for you.

Sorry . . . just had to say Wal-Mart is the worst! They could care less what your family obligations are. My DH worked there for five years as an assistant manager. Before that he was a store manager for Ames and Wal-Mart promised him many times if he stuck it out he would be a store manager (they are the only ones that truly make any money. . . assistant managers get the same lousy bonus as everyone else and the store manager gets an obscene bonus check). He worked an hour away. He started out closer to home and they kept moving him further and further away. If he worked the day shift he left at 5:30 a.m. and got home between 7:00-7:30 p.m. He worked at least two night shifts a week which meant he left around 10:30 a.m. and got home around midnight. He worked most weekends and holidays. He absolutely hated Christmas. He worked on average including commute 60-70 hours a week on salary of course. He reached the salary cap on his position and could not get a raise anymore for the last year he was there. Despite all their empty promises of a store manager position it never happened. I can't tell you how much time he missed from our kids' lives and how many baseball games, holidays, school functions, etc. he missed out on. There were literally 2 or 3 days' at a time when the kids didn't see him because he left before they got up and came home long after they were in bed. He worked overnights for about a year too. I finally got fed up and told him to look for something else even if it meant taking less money and we would just figure it out. I felt like he was literally giving up having a life and seeing his kids grow by staying with Wal-Mart. He is now working in financing for auto sales. He is much happier. The hours are about half and we are doing okay financially. I am so happy we are free of Wal-Mart and I always advise peope to run the other way if they are thinking of working there or at least give serious consideration to how much you are willing to give up to work there. No trick or treating with your kids, working Thanksgiving day, missing baseball games, football games, school functions, going in Christmas night, working Christmas Eve. It is just crazy.:(

My DH works retail, and if you want to work retail be sure you are available come inventory time, EVERYBODY works on inventory day! We cannot even plan on a trip to Disney for spring break because we don't know his inventory date yet.

My DH works at Linens N things and they hire based on need, so if there is a morning shift, he hires for that. He needs morning people right now if you want to move to Kansas City! That is really a good company to work for, but you need to be a very people oriented person, they have a program that everyone who walks in the door MUST be greeted and assisted if they want it or heads will roll!

Retail in general is going to be an area where they want anytime availability and rarely will hire for Mon through Friday. The morning shift I spoke of is not set in stone and some evenings would be required. If everyone is restricted to a schedule, they can't do what is needed for the business. For example, my Dh has decided thanks to the greeting program that even though the store opens at ten he needs to get people in at 6 so they can get merchansdise worked out between 6 Am and 9:30. That is just the nature of things.
