Do I take my driver's license?

I'm not confused about using a copy of the passport for anything other than unlikely possibility that I lose the actual passport and need it to help me.

Just to be on the safe side I'm bringing my DL, CAC Card, passport and library card. (kidding about the library card - I don't even have one. ;) )

:scared1:HOW can you not have a library card!!!!!! I have four active ones and DD has five:rotfl:
1.Our small town
2.the bigger city near by
3. a German-American library in the city
4. from our old home in New Hampshire (where I was a librarian) that we can still use for downlaodeable audiobooks
5. from the city her grandparents live in which she uses all summer long.

Alright, now that i am past the shock of no library card I was coming back to post that Norway is part of the Schengen Agreement so that should be a simple border crossing with no passport check as well:thumbsup2

I do recommend having credit cards from two different accounts if possible. You carry one account's card and your DH the other. That way you still have an active card if someone's wallet or purse is stolen and you have to cancel an account (I recommend this for travel anywhere--the one time we had this happen was in Florida)

You should definitely bring your license.

Sounds like an awesome trip! When I travel overseas I also make a copy of my credit cards (front and back) and also lock it in the safe in the hotel. This way, if something happens to my wallet I can get in touch with the CC company fast.

NHDisney, we will each carry 2 major CC's each.

can, DBF thought of that this morning too.

In 24 hours I'll be boarding a plane! Woooohoooooo!

Snipped from other thread:
<-----------can't send PMs. :confused3:laughing:

Sadly yes! I will be unable to participate until June 13. :goodvibes

So, you are being "punished" here on the DIS, having your PM privileges & siggie taken away and you won't even be around for your "punishment?" Hmmm, :scratchin I wonder if the Mods will postpone & extend your June 13 date, until after you get back? :rotfl:

Just make sure that they are not joint credit cards. If one of you has your wallet stolen and the cards have to be cancelled, any secondary cards are cancelled at the same time.

If the CCs are both from the same accounts, then I'd also recommend what NHDisney suggested and each carry a different one...that way there will always be one CC account active even if a wallet gets lost or stolen.

Not true for my American Express. Same account, different numbers. I lost mine last year, and it was replaced, but DH's still worked fine and did not need to be replaced. Now the two cards have different expiration dates also, which I find odd.

However, when making my hotel reservations in Europe, several places did not accept AmEx, so I'm not sure how useful it will be.

For the technically challenged or someone who will only be using a global phone for overseas calls Verizons loaner program is cheaper -and easier than buying an unlocked phone and doing all the switch of sim cards-im neither techinally or communications challenged and after careful research i decided its the best option for me-hubby has a quad band phone since he uses his in iraq.
Also-PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not think a copy of your passport is good as ID -the ONLY thiing you can use a copy of your passport for is to speed the process of getting a new one-it will not allow you to board flights from foriegn countries or get back into the US and it is not a form of ID.
For the PP who said you needed a license to board a domestic flight-i have never used my drivers licenses when flying domestically-my military dependant Id is my prefered, goverment issued ID.

I would definitely not buy an unlocked GDM phone just for travel but if anyone had one (I have 4 here and probably 30 at the office) or could borrow one the SIM is pretty easy and for me it was cheaper. I'm sure it depends on where you are going, how you are using the phone, and what you already have.

My best friend was at a US airport recently and struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler who was stranded at the airport - his wallet had been lifted on his way to the airport. With the strict ID requirements, he wasn't allowed to check in and board his plane home. He had NO money, NO ID, and was going to have to wait for his dad to overnight his passport to the airport. He couldn't even receive a Western Union of cash without ID to pick it up, or check into a hotel without ID. He was going to spend the night at the airport. After hearing his story, I'd travel with the extra ID in a separate location and make sure I had a way to prove my identity.

Assuming this was a domestic flight and he is a citizen here, that's just weird. Because you can indeed get on domestic flights without ID, you just have to undergo more extensive security. Questions, etc etc. Now, if he did that but still couldn't prove his identity, that makes sense, but I do hope he had already tried, since it would just be sad to think that he thought he couldn't, when he could have at least had a chance.

There's a spot on the TSA website all about not having an ID, but their website seems to be worse than disney's in going down, and I can't get it to load right now.

Maybe international flights are different and the passport supercedes the license but you need a license to board a flight, at least domestically.

I do know now that I advised her incorrectly about her passport though! I told her to keep it in her suitcase in her room, not to carry it around in her purse all day but now I found that was wrong. Best thing is to lock it in the hotel safe but if not, keep it with you! She does have a copy and so do I but I hope we don't have to figure out how to replace it in an emergency.

I used to use my pport for domestic flights ALL the time. Much faster, at least back then!

The pport thing about where to keep it...honestly I think it's about 50/50. Same divide in thought for cruises when you get to a port. Some want to keep it with you, worrying that the room might be broken into; others want to keep it in the room worrying that you'll be mugged. I have carried mine with me, personally. I keep it safe (hubby has a neck wallet that goes far down his shirt that he keeps his in on work travels), and I trust myself and sense of awareness for those around me over leaving it in the room where who knows how many people might have a key...
