i am going the week of march 5-8. Do i really need to purchase MaxPass? is this the only way to get a fastpass now? or is there still a fastpass machine?

i am trying to budget, and $10 x 3 every day would be $120 extra, plus i would need to get a better data plan to use it which costs $$.

Nope, you absolutely don't! You can still get free fast passes for all of the rides by scanning your ticket at the fast past distribution areas for each ride. You might consider getting Maxpass for one person each day however for the Photopass. I'm an AP holder who doesn't have Maxpass, but I bought Maxpass for one day this week to get photos of my son at the Minnie character breakfast. Totally worth it!

The free FP machines still exist, so it is totally possible to use FPs without purchasing MP. MP is just the digital version of FP with a few extra perks. If you know how the FP system works, you'll have no problem using the regular, free FP system.

Advantages of MP
Unlimited photos to include ride photos
Longest wait for next MP is 90 minutes
Booking MP for any FP/MP ride from anywhere (once you've scanned through entry gates for the day)

Read post #2 of this thread. It has a very good MP usage description

You can have a great trip without it. I love it but I would not change my data plan for it. On a tight budget trip it would be one of the easiest things to cut out imho. Like I said, I love it and recommend it and rave about it but ultimately it's just an extra, not a necessity. The legacy FP system still works just fine!

I will have a 3 day park ticket in June and I am not going to get Maxpass. I am from Europe and data roaming charges are astronomical so when I am in America I only use free WiFi. The free Wifi in Disney is not reliable enough for me to justify the cost of Maxpass. Also like PP have said the normal free Fastpass machines are still in use. I have no interest in the Photopass

If it's feasible, could you add MP for one day of your trip only? Use that day to focus on your 'can't miss' rides that use MP/FP. It really does add to your day in the parks, through convenience and the perks offered.

I was about to talk up MaxPass & how it can help make your trip that little bit more magical BUT honestly I probably wouldn’t do it either if I had to pay to upgrade my data plan to use it. That sounds stressful & expensive & you can still enjoy fastpass the way you used to (keep in mind that if you use regular fastpass these days that your paper “pass” is just a reminder of your return time now & to have your park ticket, AP, or Disney parks App ready to be scanned when you return to that ride)

So the regular fasspass has changed then? The fastpass ticket produced from the fastpass machines it not what you give the CM when you return to the FP line during the time indicated? It is now attached to your park ticket, and you have to give them your park ticket to return to the FP line? So this means that if you have a fastpass and you are not going to use it you cannot be a nice guest and give this to someone else to use instead or you cannot allow your kid to use your fastpass rather than you using it? I hadn't read anything about the traditional fastpass rules being altered so this is new information.

This is correct.

Mostly correct. Everyone has to scan their ticket (or the app) now to use FP. You can only share within your own group (someone you are willing to loan your ticket to), not hand off unused passes to strangers. The good news is that you can cancel FPs, so if you aren't going to use a FP, you can cancel it and someone else with MaxPass might be able to nab it instead.

OP are you sure younhaveto upgrade your data plan? I’ve been reading that it doesn’t take that much data. You’re more likely to have your battery die than a data issue.

That is too bad - I used to like to do that - say we had fastpasses for later in the day and we decided to leave early instead - we'd just hand them to someone and let them use it - it was a nice way of passing on some magic to people.

Also if you don't have MP how can you cancel your paper fastpass?

Sorry for hijacking this post - just trying to get some additional info on the changes.

I haven't tried it myself (since we added MP to our APs), but others have reported being able to cancel FPs in the app without purchasing MP. Hopefully one of them will chime in with the how-to's.

You can cancel and manage your FP/MP through the Disneyland app. MP just gives you the ability to book through the app vs going to the machine (plus some other perks). Redemption, viewing and cancelling of passes can be done in the app regardless of how you booked it.

They actually linked FPs to park tickets before Maxpass even launched last summer. The only paper ones you get now are for World of Color and Fantasmic!

We have not been to the parks since March 2016 - so before any of these changes were made - back when you handed them your FP and kept your ticket in your wallet. Sounds like MP is quite the feature though - we'll certainly be trying it!!

This is correct. The piece of paper that prints out will have your return time on it but you need to scan your park ticket to redeem your fast pass. You can give your kid your fast pass, just let them scan your park ticket. They don't care whose it is.
