with scissors today when I got my hair cut? It went pretty deep, but did stop bleeding eventually and I know I didn't need stitches. It hurts a lot and I don't want to take off the bandage they put on me there, I just wasn't sure if I need tetnus shot for that. I just wondered if I should call the Doctor tomorrow about it. I'm thinking I shouldn't need one, but then again this has never happand before so I just don't know.

whens the last time you had one? I think youre supposed to get one every 10 yrs and if its been longer than that I would get one to be on the safe side, you never know when you could "really" need one

Unless you have had one in the last few years, I would say yes. The guideline used to be every 10 years, but I know that I got cut and had a shot about 4 years prior to being cut and they said I had to have it...

Better safe than sorry, I would think...

About three years ago, I sliced my finger so deep with a dirty metal tile cutter (think razor blade but bigger) that it bleed for about an hour, hurt like crazy, and probably needed stitches. I still don't have total feeling in that finger.

The moral of the story is, it was a dirty old metal object, and I am still alive and have never had a tetanus shot.

I'm sure you will be fine. Just clean the area and splash on a little alcohol and antibiotic ointment just to ward off any infection.

Feel better!

It has been over ten years since I had one. I just wondered if it was to protect you for when you stepped on a rusty nail or something similar. I wasn't sure if being cut with scissors could cause anything. I am such a baby about shots. But I think I should suck it up and get the shot.

My goodness, where did they cut you? Luckily for my clients I don't cut them, but I usually cut myself once or twice a month! I have permanent scars on my left hand because I cut myself in the same places. I've been doing hair for 23 years and don;t have a tetnus shot--never thought about getting on because of work but maybe I should ask?

go get a tetanus shot! you really do need one every 10 years. I got one this fall, it had only been 8 years, but they have recently added the vaccine for Pertussis (Whooping Cough) to the adult tetanus shot and my Dr. wanted me to have it since I have school age kids.

I always made sure I had them when I used to cut hair..same reason I was constantly cutting myslef, sometimes really deep too! I still have scars to this day and I haven't done that kind of work in almost 18 years!

I think that whenever there is the chance that something nasty might have got in there it's a good thing to be better safe than sorry.

It is the top of my left ear. It was with thinning shears. I felt so bad for the stylist who was practically in tears. It was an accident. Accidents happand.
I am a big baby about pain and blood. But I stayed calm for the sake of the stylist.
I am currently on an antibiotic for a urinary tract infection, so I don't think that is good because it won't get infected.
I just remember being at the beach as a child and stepping on a nail and needing a tentus shot, but I wondered today if that was because it was a rusty nail or because it was metal. The fact that you get cut with scissors a lot shows me I need not worry. Thanks for putting my mind to rest.

Ouch!

I had to laugh at your statement about me getting cut with scissors a lot...the truth really is, I cut MYSELF with the scissors way too often! LOL Haven't cut myself in a few weeks now so I am due. Short curly hair is the worst for me!

Nancy, I know what you mean by scars on top of scars!!

I got cut at work last year, and had to get stitches, the Doctor asked when was the last tetanus shot I had was, I went 'ummmmm' and then she said "today" :rotfl:

I'm glad I made you laugh because you made me feel better.
I'm glad they were able to finally finish my hair cut. She did such a nice job, and her personality more then made up for the error.

Get a shot. I have to tell you that if tetanus was on those scissors and you haven't had a shot in a while, it might not do any good anyway. My husband got tetanus and gasgangrene even though he got a tetanus shot after he was injured. His injury was a puncture wound though, that might have made a difference. They told me he would probably die from the tetanus. He didn't, thank God. Just get the shot as a precaution.Everybody else should keep up with their tetanus shots, it's a nasty disease.

Usually, you need to get a tetanus shot for a puncture wound. Not a cut. BUT .. other people are right that you are supposed to get one every ten years. I'm sure if you talk to your dr., they can have you come into the office and get one. You might as well, and there's no harm in it. I don't think its something you need to sit around worrying yourself about, though. There are less than 100 cases in the US every year, just so you know. Don't sit up all night worrying :)

Tetanus is a germ that lives in soil. It's not the rust on the rusty nail, but the soil on the rusty nail that carries the germs. That's why you should always get a shot if you get a puncture or a cut from something out in the yard--nail, saw, dog bite, fence.

It would be extremely rare for styling shears to harbor tetanus. :confused3 If you're worried, call your doctor in the a.m. Even with a dirty cut(with someone that may have touched dirt) it's okay to wait a day--you have to get the shot within 72hrs. There's no emergency. I think the bigger concern would be the possibility of infection. Ears don't have a great blood supply, so infection can be serious. Keep an eye on the cut. Happy healing!

The bacteria that causes tetanus predominantly lives in the dirt, on the ground. It can be everywhere, of course, but really it is in the ground. That's why stepping on a dirty nail or something outside on the ground is a big risk. Animals also carry in in their mouths; hence the need for one after an animal bite.

I probably wouldn't get one from the scissor cut but, like you, I would fret about it. I haven't had a tetanus shot since I was 12 and no one has ever even offered me one (and I go to the doctor a lot).

I do think you need a new hairstylist.

Hi, Brenda! I'm another Brenda that is a hairstylist:)

I too cut my fingers with my scissors constantly, especially when I get them sharpened...I usually get the big box of bandaids from sams to keep on hand at my salon for me and my employees, lol.

I wouldn't personally worry about it for a scissor cut. But, if it's going to knaw at you, then call your doctor and see what they think. At least that might put your mind at rest.

Hey Brenda!
I use those Nexcare bandages that are waterproof. They stay on no matter what. An amazing bandaid, for sure! Good to see you on the CB!!!

I meant to get a tetanus shot a couple of times in the last few years since I hadn't had one since I was a kid, probably, but one time I got a pneumonia shot instead (didn't want to get two) and the other time there was a shortage. I got one a few weeks ago because I kept getting stabbed and scratched from nails when I was pulling up carpeting. I figured I'd play it safe, and I was due for one anyway. The Dr told me that insurance often doesn't cover "routine" tetanus shots so he had to look at one of my wounds and describe it in his notes. I also showed him proof with pieces of '70's orange carpeting still clinging to my clothes. :)

Sherri, I thought at first you were cutting your own hair! Never occurred to me I could get wounded when I got a haircut. Brenda, at least you keep it to yourself! Because, if I had moved to Alcoa... ;)
