Do I need a Fantasmic dinner pkg?

I keep reading about a fantasmic dinner package. I am not sure what this is?
We are going in Aug. for our second trip to the World. Last time we missed Fantasmic, but this time we have planned to see it. Do we need some kind of reservation for this??

We have done the Fantasmic package before and are doing it again this summer at The Brown Derby - there is a nice FAQ for it at http://allearsnet.com/din/fantdin1.htm

But the short answer is ... (quoted from the above)

The Fantasmic! Dinner Package includes dinner at one of the participating Disney-MGM Studios restaurants and reserved seating in the Fantasmic! amphitheater. As of this writing, only Brown Derby, Mama Melrose, and Hollywood & Vine are participating.

This means that instead of waiting in line for 60-90 minutes outside the theater, you can walk right up to the theater 30-45 minutes before show time, (no waiting in line!) and still have a seat.

We're doing it on our July trip because I do not want to wait a long time with 3 kids. Be advised: if you are on the dining plan and choose Hollywood Brown Derby, it'll cost you 2 TS credits each; Mama Melrose and Hollywood & Vine are both 1 TS credit each. And, the when you call for the reservation, you will be required to leave a $10 per person credit card deposit. If you do intend to do this in August, you should call soon because there are a limited number of packages available each night, and they do get booked up.

But isn't it true that the "doors" to the stadium open over an hour before the show. So therfore there is no waiting in line outside the theatre...only waiting on hard seats in the stadium for an hour.

This is what I have always read..iam hoping this is the case as we are planning to turn up an hr before the show and hope we can get good seats...or at least seats .We will late August.

We did the FDP in July but never took advantage of it because we skipped the first show and watched the second show. In the summer months/busier times, there are two Fantasmic shows each night and the second one is generally less crowded. We didn't get super close seats but we were happy with our view We will likely skip the FDP next May and just go with the flow. HTH

We went in May and did the hollywood and vine fantasmic dinner. We had already had dinner one night at Mama Melrose but picked H&V because having never been to mgm didn't realize the park size and thought mama melrose was too long of a walk. Honestly the meal at H&V was awfull.....the worst all week. Buffets at disney suck!
We ate at Mama Melrose again another night it was sooo good.
If we go again I would definitely eat at mama melrose again but wouldn't worry about the seats. We could've gotten better seats in the front(middle) by entering the regular entrance and bypassing the fantasmic entrance. the fantasmic seats are off to the side and it really is better to sit in the middle to see the show straight on I think. It was a good show but I may or may not do it again. I think my kids would prefer to still be hitting rides than sitting through that again.
Enjoy and definitely hit mama melrose. Try their homemade Sangria it's to die for. Plus they will give you the recipe. I have made it twice since being home for 2 weeks. Love Love Love it.

Okay we went in Feb this year and I thought that Fantasmic would not be that crowded, boy was I wrong we showed up 1 hr prior and just were able to get a seat on the left side of the area. Only about 100 seats at that time and they quickly filled behind me. This time we are doing the package so we will have decent seats. It is a wonderful show
