Ugh not all of them according to this report:

How disgusting is this:sick:. I think from now on I might want to request clean sheets be sent up and I'll remake the bed myself. It's so gross that people can't be counted on to actually do the job they are being paid to do! Gag

that is pretty disgusting. 1/3 the chance of getting dirty sheets.

i was at a marriott 2 room one, we let the lady in to clean and do our beds again, we noticed she used the same rag to clean the toilets(cleaned first) and our table and counter... we felt disgusted... :\

Couple of things come to mind: These are all NYC hotels, is it possible this is isolated to the Big Apple? I wouldn't think so, but with the sample size how would we know? Also, they said 3 of the 9 hotels had dirty sheets, it'd be nice to know what they other six "good" hotels were. It's pretty weak "journalism." Note to the hotel chains corporate division: Your managers should undergo some kind of media relations training. Those folks were pretty lame in their explanations.

I wonder a lot about this. I have seen too many episodes of Dateline-type shows that expose the hotel industry secrets. One was a maid sprayed drinking glasses with windex, used the same rag to clean the toilet as she used to wipe the remote, not changing sheets etc. I try to bring my own pillow, unless we fly, because I get grossed out at thinking of other peoples heads on the pillow and drooling etc. Pillows should not be shared, I don't care if they change the case, the case is so thin.

I have a perfect size buckwheat pillow I cannot sleep without, that comes with me always.
I put it in my suitcase in the morning too before the maid comes in, I don't want her touching it, same with our toothbrushes.

After seeing those reports, we never use the hotel drinking glasses unless we wash them ourselves. I much prefer disposable cups that are wrapped in plastic. We do a bedbug check before any luggage enters the room. Then I do a general wipe down with disinfecting wipes. I'm not a total clean freak, but I would rather spend a couple of minutes cleaning if it means getting rid of hidden dirt and germs. I wipe the remote, phone, counter tops, tops of furniture, toilet handle, etc. We haven't encountered anything really gross yet, and we stay in hotels several times a year. Better safe than sorry!

Yep my DH has always done this and we've been married for 25 years. I've always made fun of him for being a germ-a-phobe, but the older I get and the more time I spend with him, I'm morphing into him and always have to clean everything too!

The worst was always having to take everything out the cupboards in a condo and putting them in the dishwasher before use. I always thought that was a hassle and gave him the hardest time. Now I just go right in and load the dishwasher when we arrive.

This video just really skeeves me out.

Don't watch the Youtube series "Another Dirty Room" by Dan Bell. You will never want to stay in a hotel again. :crazy2:

Not surprised. The things I've seen over the years is scary. :scared:

My must do's for hotel stay:

1. Bedbug check
2. Clorox wipe light switches, door handles, remote, phone, alarm clock, and toilet seat.
3. Do NOT touch floor in bare feet.
4. Pull bedspread or comforter down, unless it's the new style where fresh sheets are on top as well as bottom. (Still make sure I don't touch it though.)
5. Rarely make coffee and will only do it if it's a single cup machine. Please, DO NOT EVER use carafe pots in the hotel rooms - they are truly petri dishes.
6. Make sure toothbrush is put away before room is serviced.
7. Cry (jk) if only drinking vessels are glass. But if they are, they will get a big time cleaning before I use it.

FWIW when I was a maid I cleaned the rooms on my station like they were my own home. Most maids I knew did the same. We were required to change sheets, scrub showers/toilets, dust and vacuum DAILY. Every room. Every day. We had inspectors that checked daily as well. I can still strip and make a bed in under 60 seconds.

I never thought of doing that, but know I think I'll have to! We're staying in a condo in Miami later this month. It looks nice and clean in the photos, and the owner/manager seems great. But I'm pretty sure I'll be loading the dishwasher as soon as we arrive!

Yeah it's nasty, but I can't think about it too much or I'd never leave home.

At least with sheets, there's a chance they might've been washed, but you know the blanket and bedspread are filthy and likely haven't been cleaned for months (or more).

Eh. What I don't know won't hurt me.

Pretty much this. I travel a ton. The things I do include checking the toilet, the shower, and the sheets, in order to make sure there are no nasty stains. I do a bed bug check of course. But beyond that, not much. I'm on vacation and if I thought about all the nasty possibilities, I'd be so busy cleaning I'd never leave the hotel room.
