Do Disney dollars expire?

I just do NOT UNDERSTAND the concept of "Disney Dollars".

Why would Disney make something so obviously easy to "counterfeit"?
(Look how hard it is for the US TREASURY to stop that with US currency).

And using them as a way to "SAVE" for Disney...
Folks, there are "vacation clubs", Christmas clubs" and just plain "SAVINGS ACCOUNTS"... and they all offer INTEREST if you put in your money.

As to being "better than cash" at Disney... no possible way!

Sorry, but even to a long-time "Disney Nut" like me, the idea of Disney Dollars is just WAY TOO nutty!

First of all, let's stick to the question. The OP wasn't looking for a lecture on what type of currency or savings plans are best. The OP has a specific question and wanted an answer, not opinions on whether Disney Dollars are good or bad.

Back on topic, I don't think the dollars expire, but I thought I saw a thread recently where there was maybe some discussion of ending the program. In this case, I guess your existing dollars would not expire, but you would not be able to get new ones. But I certainly don't know this for a fact.

I agree that Disney dollars are not better than money, but to me there primary purpose is just as a fun thing for the kids and for adults it is much like a gift certificate only much more fun. That said while Disney dollars are obviously easier to counterfeit than real money they are not easy to counterfeit. Disney dollars are made with special paper just like paper currency. Those pens that disappear on real money also work on Disney dollars. Additionally they use some special ink including a special color changing ink disguised as pixie dust to prevent reproduction. Sure it is entirely possible to make counterfeit Disney dollars if you wanted to but you would have to use low denominations (thats all they make) and you would only be able to use tham at Disney World. Most likely if you tried to pass off enough counterfeit Disney dollars to make it worth your effort you would get caught.

The OP asked a very simple question which had already been properly answered before Robo made his post. It was a yes or no question which had been answered and required no further discussion. Robo didn't do anything wrong.

Disney dollars are not better than money for Disney. Its a pure jackpot for them. They force you spend it at their parks/stores. But the real kicker is how many of you keep a bill or so for a souvneir. Jackpot!

The reasoning behind my saving, is that the dollars can only be spent at Disney. If I save money in any other form, it may likely go to something other than the trip. That's all.

I'm wondering if they are still available. We just got back this weekend from WDW and I noticed at the world of disney store they had a lot of Giftcards on display. those plastic credit card types. Disney is pbbly phasing out the disney dollars.

I just saw a thread on Disney Dollars and there was a link of the newly (Feb 2006) issued Disney Dollars. Cinderella is on the 1 and I can't remember who is on the 5 & 10. If they are phasing them out, why would Disney keep reissuing new ones?

Yes but it's probably the ONLY souvenir that has actual "value" to it. By that I mean anything else you buy to bring home is worth pennies on the dollar at a rummage sale 4 years later........

BUT the delightful little Disney dollar you brought home, if you no longer want to keep it.........and want to spend it.....

is still worth a dollar!

Since they still offer some value to park tickets that were bought several years ago, I would think they would still accept Disney Dollars if they ever quit the program.

If you have a Disney visa card use it to buy Disney dollars at your local Disney store. Then you get the Disney money and points on your visa to use on your Disney trip (if you transfer them to the rewards card).

I don't think Disney dollars expire, but I've never actually asked.
