I have a few villas/rental homes we're looking at for our trip to rent. Obviously I want to save some money. How did you negotiate a price? How did you approach it? If you did, how much lower did you offer then the listing price?

I always try to negotiate.

I typically take the all-inclusive rate (including pool heat and taxes) and then try to reduce by about 5% or round off the numbers - i.e. they offer $1950 for the week, I counter offer $1850.

My opinion has always been "it never hurts to ask". Worst case scenario, they say no. :rolleyes1

I would always try and negotiate, but try not to offend the owner, especially if they clearly have a popular home. If you are trying to rent a home in a community and receive a great quote from a less popular home I would not try and ask the more popular home to match that price, chances are they will say no. You have a lot more bargaining power with less popular homes as they really are more desperate to secure bookings.
