Do cell phones and/or walkie talkies work well in parks?

Using Verizon with the "IN" family plan the calls between family members are not counted towards minutes, no long distance charge, and no roaming charge. They work in attractions (using vibrate mode) My son (hes was in Delaware) called my wife (she was at the top of Space Ship Earth). The call was clear and there were no charges of any kind. On weekends all the minutes are included and for the price for service for 4 family members it is great.

When we were in MK last year, we used the 2-way radios and had no trouble. We didn't separate often, and conversations were generally brief, but they were nice for "just-in-case" while I (the designated Fastpass fetcher) was away. We did quick listens to check the voice traffic, then selected a channel that didn't seem very busy. It is nice to see that the coverage by Cingular is usually good, so this year we may use the cell phones as back-up. Our cell plans have long-distance included, but would charge for roaming, so for us the 2-way radios will still likely be our primary.

I must be the last person in the country who does not own a cell phone.....how have I survived this long?

LOL you are not alone! I actually DO have one, but hardly ever use it. :rotfl: I wanted one now that I'm a Mom so I could call easily for assistance if needed, or to tell DH we were running late (ok, too much shopping!) But I have never caught "the bug".

I have Verizon and my phone worked well. I found that I had to charge the phone more often, though.
The phone worked well OUTSIDE but not inside buildings. When I used my phone at BWV, I found that I needed to go outside to my balcony to get reception. I had 2, 15 minute conversations, long distance, and my phone was getting abnormally hot.

Strangely enough, when I was about to call home from the MGM park, a light lit up on my phone saying that there would be an extra charge for
that particular call. I hung up right away.

Has anyone with Cingular used their phones in the park? Thanks!

Used Cingular at Old Key West but it was not very good (depended on where we were at OKW) but son called from MK to me in Epcot and we had great reception. Think it really depends as to where you are and what is around you (as far as buildings, etc).

You must not have teens. I have two, the older is 16 and drops DD14 off at her HS before he heads to his, and then picks her up after school if he and she are coming directly home. In any given week, their after school plans change many times. We could not survive without Cingular's family plan.
The call listing in the statement each month is ridiculous, it looks like we do nothing else but hang on the phone, pages of 1 or 2 minute calls.

The phones have saved me mucho gas, as I rarely have to do unplanned pickups anymore.

No, our kids are still young.

We just got back on 4/2. We used our Nextels quite a bit so we could split up with the kids (different parks) and be in quick contact with each other. They worked great and yes, Disney use Nextels exclusively. Used mainly the two way capability but over the course of nine days had to make several cell calls. No problems whatsoever.

I finally convinced my parents to get a cell phone. My mother thought she'd NEVER use it. But, since she does a lot of commuting from NH to Mass, and she refuses to give up her Volvo despite having 250,000 miles, she agreed to get one for emergency uses in case she ever gets stranded or breaks down. As it turns out, she talks on it all the time, and couldn't imagine being without it now. After all, she gets to call my cell for free... lol :)

Ok this will sound odd but it's a need to know.

The family is planning a day trip to Daytona(yes I live with a NASCAR addict;) ) and I'll be taking a solo park day. Will cell phones work then?(2 different companies)
