I'm considering getting my son a pet for his very own. I suggested a lizard to my dh, but he thought maybe a gecko would be better. What are the pros/cons of having a gecko? I hear they can live a LONG time. What do dometicated geckos eat? Are the lizard patterned geckos the only choice? I wouldn't mind the green one like the Geico gecko. Do geckos only eat other little critters/bugs? I don't want the geckos food to accidentally escape.
Can you take a gecko out and play with it? Any and all thoughts about a gecko would be much appreciated. I did a search here on the DIS and there weren't too many threads about geckos. Thanks all.

I just read this at about.com,Tokay geckos are usually voracious eaters and can be fed a variety of insect prey (crickets, superworms, mealworms, waxworms, grasshoppers, cockroaches, etc). Larger tokays may take pinky mice. Prey should be gut loaded prior to feeding, and dusted with a vitamin supplement containing calcium. Juveniles can be fed daily; adults every other day or so.

Can you feed a gecko frozen food? Ewwwww if its live! Maybe a gecko isn't the pet for my ds.

You could look into a beta fish if you wanted a first pet. They live a few years usually and are pretty low maintenance. You obviously can't take it out and play with the fish though so if you're looking for that aspect of a pet then I'm really no help ;) .

yeah, until he sold out and started advertising car insurance. Ungrateful little wretch never even sent home a percentage.

I'm getting the idea that geckos aren't a popular choice for pets.
