Do any companies hire anymore without using a recruiter!

No offense to recruiters as I know there are some on these boards, but I can't stand the ones in our area. They all remind me of sleazy used car salesman. Each and every job they have listed is the best and brightest with the best benefits. If you are getting paid based on whether they hire me of course it is. Geez!

I've just quit applying to jobs listed with recruiters and have only saw two in my field in the last month that weren't.

I've never had luck getting a job through a recruiter. My job prior to the one I have now I was a "programmer/analyst." I don't have a college degree. most recruiters won't even speak to you without one.

Well, I've never had a problem doing the jobs I was hired for, working side-by-side with people who had masters and even PhD's. At this point in my career, my proven track record should be far more important than an English Lit class I took 25 years ago. Fortunately, employers who DON'T use recruiters realize this, and I've never had a problem finding a job based on my actual skills as opposed to my educational background.

Right after we moved, my Dh received a phone call at his new job from a recruiter. Dh talked with this recruiter scoping him out to get info on "the competitor." Turns how the recruiter was trying to recruit Dh for the same company Dh already was working for.....

I wouldn't always be so quick to judge a job just because a recruiter may be handling it, or may call you, you may miss out. There are different types of recruiters as well. I work for a "recruiting" firm (on the finance not "sales" side) and we are what you call retainer not contingent, which mean we are one and only one company hired by another to fill a position, and we get paid regardless, and upfront even if know one is hired. We will try and find a great match for our Client to be sure they get what they are looking for, we will not hound you. Contingent firms get paid as placements are made, there is much more at stake so the scope or pay may seem bit "too good". Sorry you haven't had much luck with them.

I hope DH held out for as much $$$ as possible (more than he was currently paid). If he got it, he could have given his 2-week notice, then come back on the day of his "new" job at more salary!

But I suppose his employer might not think this was so clever.

Just kidding- the best part of my job is that phone call letting someone know that they have been selected for that specific position and knowing that I helped them do it. The other side is having to make the calls to fire people or end their assignments. That isn't very fun.

Companies use is to facilitate their hiring- it's easier to have us prescreen candidates then to have their HR department wading through tons of resumes. I'd use me if I were looking for a job!

I think it depends on the field, but we do use recruiters almost exclusively. The hires we make without them are usually employee referrals. Many companies just do not have the time/manpower to screen candidates from classifieds or internet sites. Good luck in your search.

I definitely know what you are going through. I am looking for a new job now since I was told that I am being laid off. So many jobs are through recruiters and I don't bother looking at them. I did try a few and it was a nightmare. I think most of the recruiters are running almost a bait and switch campaign. I responded to one posting because the job looked really good. When the recruiter called me they refused to talk to me about that listing and would only tell me about positions that were not in the area I was looking for. All that being said, I have worked some recruiters I have liked over the years. Unfortunately, they have never found me a job that worked out.

When the recruiter called me they refused to talk to me about that listing and would only tell me about positions that were not in the area I was looking for.

Maybe a recruiter can answer why they do this. I have used recruiters several times, and this usually happens. It has really turned me off on the whole experience.

Worse is when you actually get the job, and it pays nothing close to what you were told upfront. Why did I waste my time? Why did they waste theirs?

I just asked someone this same question about 10 minutes ago!

On Friday, I got up at 5:30 am for an 8:00 interview (!!!). I got through the whole thing only to discover that the recruiter sent me for the wrong position. I called her immediately after leaving the interview and haven't heard from her since.

I've decided to circulate resumes on my own for a while. Most companies have the information on their websites. I just have to work on a cover letter.

I had one who called me and wanted to submit my resume (not sure how he got it in the first place) for XYZ company. I told him the company was also listing direct on their website and I'd already forwarded my application as I prefer to work direct.. He cursed me and told me I could be costing him a placement fee. This was a professional upper managment position and these are the twits trying to recruit professionals to fill them.
